The past | decade has seen ‘apping become a whipping boy for public opinion, even In face of the fact that tra ping is a means of making a living, for many people and the fact that it is no more crue] than the fishing thatis done for sport. f There have been quite a ew things happening over the past three years in the search for a better way to take furbearers in a humane manner. . The conibear: trap has been on the market for about 20 years ddd it is considered (by trappers) to be a good humane trap for beaver and otter but most trappers have not had enough experience with them on upland furbearers. The trappers who have been persistent enough to pur- chase and experiment ex- tensively with the more expensive conibear have proven that is quite efficient and humane for a wide variety of animals such as mink, squirrel, weasel, marten, wolverine, fisher and lynx. For this reason the conibear was chasen as the base line, the comparison standard, for all trap testin to be done by the Federal- Provincial Committee for Humane Trapping (FPHT). That committee was formed in 1973 and had very slow and low key formative years. Last year there was a reorganization of the committee and the ‘ap- pointment of a new coor- dinator, Alex Caron. Alex immediately dusted off the information assembled by the com- mittee up to that point and circulated it to all interested ‘public and. government ies: He also spread the word that the committee was Interested in traps and: designs of traps so that the committee could test. the humane qualities of as many traps as possible. In the past three months the number of designs resenled for testing has: nereased 50 percent over the total of submissions received during the previous two years. In view of this increase the com- mittee was forced to appoint e to an advisory commit screen aut any obviously unacceptable igns, The impressive cross section and qualifications of that group needs to be listed here — it includes: Fred Gilbert, biology professor at Guelph University; Bruce Stephenson, research biclogist, Ontario Depart- ment of Natural Resources; Neal Jotham, vice president of the Canadian Assoc. for .Humane Trapping; Lloyd Cook, president of the Canadian Trappers Federation and finally, Roy Newcombe, Professor of Engineering at McMasters University. That regal group has looked over the 100 odd designs and forwarded ten of them for testing. CSA (the group that test your sters) has been assigned the task of mechanical testing and biological tests are being done at the University of Guelph. The committee has designed a dummy animal that can be in the killing tests in order to cut down on the amount of live animals that would have to be subjected to death in order that a humane trap could be developed. All tests have been completed now dn about five designs and these will be put out to rappers for field testing this fall. even . And what have the trappers been doing during this time? Not enough, most people will aay. Getting rustrated and mad the rapper will tell you. And both would be right. Two years ago B.C, trappers, in cooperation with government, starled an § education program —_ and immediately stepped on thelr wrong foot. With the sore bunions that gave the government and with the new administration's desire to economize, the education program now has the complete look of. a mang wolf. The trappers of B.C. can supply the expertise to run a trappers school, but they cannot supply the financing, so they are dependant on the govern- ment or the public for that support. The government of this day apparently can't contribute and the public apparently would sooner give their money to organizations that use it to trappers all sorts of abusive names. In order to have a trapper school there must he humane traps available to that school, At the present time there are no traps in Canada that the humane societies will accept as being humane. The Com- mittee for Humane Trap- pine has five models they lieve will be OK and the trappers (with the cooperation of government) should now ‘be able to proceed to institute a trapping school of some substance. . is With the number of people that derive a considerable portion of their living from trapping, a ban of existing traps should not be con- sidered by government until such time as good, ap- proved, humane traps are - BOWLING TERRACE FIVE PIN BOWLING ASSOCIATION By Lillian Joyes We must apologize to the am “Tuesday Morning Coffee League: ; Team High Triple - Donkey Five - 2975 Team High Single - Donkey Five - 1084 . This form is for inventors to record thelr trap designs for patent protection and for forwarding to the com- mittee for thelr con- sideration. There are two local inventors who will be submitting trap designs, one is Peter Hugan, areal oldtime trapper from the Nass.
