Review Night scene on Coal Harbor EDITORIAL PAGE x Diet and the farmers HE BIG trek of over 1,000 West- ern farmers to Ottawa is over— but the problems remain. This epic farm delegation, back- ed by a petition signed by 302,000 Western Canedians, who also sub- scribed a total of $225,000 to help the farmers present their case, is now history. Prime Minister Diefenbaker, who prides himself on being a Western- er and who professes to know the farmers’ problems, gave the farm delegation one hour of Grade No. 1 tory demagogy—but nothing else. There would be “no deficiency payments,” but promising John gave the farmers another promise— to give their problems “continued study.” After this show in the sumptuous ballroom of the Chateau Laurier, one old western farmer on the delegation summed up Diefenbaker in a six-word review: “He’s Jimmy Gardiner all over again!” It would be a fatal error on the > part of anyone to think the matter is ended with the farm delegation’s return home, with little or nothing save a sample of Diefenbaker dema- gogy. On the contrary it is just possible that the Tory base in Western agriculture may suffer an irreparable jolt, and that Tory - Pp efe 3, e acific Tribune ~ Phone MUtual 5-5288 Editor — TOM McEWEN Managing Editor — BERT WHYTE Published weekly at * Room 6 — 426 Main Street Vancouver 4, B.C. Diefenbaker’s ability to hornswog- gle the farmers won’t attain the - long durability of the Liberal trick- ster, Jimmy Gardiner. The farm trek to Ottawa brought our Western farmers and their problems into every Canadian home and raised the old question in the minds of new thousands; how come that Liberal, Socred and Tory gov- ernments are so ready to subsidize and give away vast handouts to powerful industrial monopolists — but have only demagogic promises to dole out when it comes to Can- ada’s hard-pressed primary pro- ducers? WO GREAT classical writers ‘ gave the world two distinct def- initions of the law. “The law,” says Dickens’ Mr. Bumble, “is a h’ass.” Anatole France described its “broader” features, as in Bill 43. “The majestic equality of the law,” said France, “forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges.” In Bill 43 the profit- glutted monopoly exploiter and the wage earner “enjoy” a_ similar equality. Bill 43 is vicious anti-labor legi- slation. For this the working people of B.C. can thank a Socred stooge government of reactionary big busi- ness, plus those timid right-wing social democrats in the leading cir- cles of B.C. labor, who seek to ad- vance their own opportunist brand of politics by throttling all effective rank-and-file action in opposition to Bill 43 during its period of gesta- tion; by opposing any and all de- cisive and effective united action by the unions to successfully block the passage of Bill 43, with chatter about the need of “education” and the mirase of a CCF “alternative” to Socred reaction come next pro- vincial election. With such assistance from the risht wing of social democracy in the leading circles of B.C. labor, it is not surprising that a Socred government. actine on behalf of the monopoly exoloiters of labor, is able to turn the clock of labor procrecs back half a century, and How to tight Bill 43 strip labor of its basic elementar, rights this Hith decree. by passing ; “ S 5 Despite this gross betrayal, # will of over 100,000 B.C. unioni te oppose this iniquitous anti- bi legislation is still growing. Tom McEwen ae eee else their effect may be, recent announce- ments by the Diefenbaker gov- ernment on “defense” should serve to startle Canadians into a sense of urgency and impending danger at the Via Dolorosa being built for them by the Tory yes- men of U.S. atomaniacs. Having successfully scrapped production of the Avro-Arrow jet (on the instructions of Washing- ton) despite the fact that over $450 million cf the people’s money was poured down this one “defense” drain, Canada’s “de- fense” is now going to be the U.S. = produced atomic missile Bomarc. . : : a2 Like ghouls scrapping around a carcass (which could eventually be that of the Canadian people) the momentary battle of these political carrion is to see how much of a “share’ in Bomarc production our U.S. “ally” will - allow its Canadian guinea pig. The March 7 edition of the Financial Post jubilantly head- lines the news that “we’re start- ing to roll on defense contracts.” -unless a mighty protest is cunted by the Canadian people on this ‘atomic. defense” mer- chandizing in death, this is not the only “roll” we’ll share in! This was emphasized a™~few days ago by a further Diefen- baker announcement that U.S. atomic bases for launching the Bomare will now be built in Canada, one near North Bay, Ontario and the other at Mont Laurier, Quebec. From policies already stated, nuclear warheads and triggermen will be supplied by the U..S. atomaniacs. Like the famous “His Master’s Voice” trademark on a less dan- _ gerous U.S.-produced commodity, Diefenbaker has also announced that when any of Canada’s NATO “allies” are at war, “Can- ada is at war.’ “e Thus the Canadian people are being pushed, -willy-nilly, — to- wards the Via Dolorosa of atomic destruction, with the Parliament and sovereignty of Canada trussed up like an_-= ancient mummy, ready to be tossed into the atomic holocaust by the arch- itects of nuclear destruction. While these fateful steps to- | wards destruction are being tick- | ed off by Washington and its co- conspirators in Ottawa, no voice in Canada’s Parliament has as | yet been heard protesting — calling upon the Canadian people _ to protest.
