eran mn peer oo Ty omithers big box store to be a Canadian Tire PLANS TO build a Cana- dian Tire store in Smithers will shift regional retail dynamics somewhat. But it’s not likely to un- seat Terrace as the emerging regional retail and service centre, says Ken Veldman of the Terrace Economic Development Authority, Smithers has been wres- ding for months with its loss of shoppers to other regional centres, including Terrace and Prince George, because of lack of a big box retailer there, Smithers town council finally revealed the identity ofa mystery retailer eycing a 1.5 hectare property on the highway as Canadian Tire. The proposed store is ex- pected to be about 80 per cent the size of the one in Terrace. Rezoning and pub- lic hearings are still required before the project goes ahead. “Obviously we're not going to pull from Smithers or that region as much,’’ Veldman = said. = ‘ ‘That eliminates an advantage we had as a regional shopping centre,” While waffic coming down Hwy37 at Kitwanga would likely still come here to shop, people in the Hazeltons might be more likely to head to Smithers once the store is built. However, he said, because there’s a critical mass ‘of Similar stores here and a larger range of shopping op- tions, Terrace will still con- tinue to attract some shop- pers from the east. “Obviously Canadian Tire as a corporation felt they weren’t pulling as much out of Smithers and that Nechako region as they could be,’* Veldman said, “If we were pulling everybody from Smithers already = they ~—s probably wouldn’t be setting up a store there.” Veldman noted that by big box retailer standards, Cana- dian Tire is still not a mega- store. Stores of that scale — like Home Depot, Castco, Wal- mart and Staples — may eventually come to the northwest. When that happens, he adds, they will likely con- tinue to look at Terrace first as one of the most attraclive locations to set up. The city’s regional geog- raphy .and market size make Terrace stand out in the region. “We're probably going 10 be on the top of their list at Icast to start. Not that we're a lock for any one thing that comes along,’ Veldman said. ‘‘Unless we blow things really badly we would always have first crack at those kind of guys,” Veldman says the decision is goad timing for Canadian Tire as the economy should be stronger by the time the store opens. He also expects a better fall and Christmas for retailers than last year, creating momentum to carry forward into 2000.
