Make sure you have the right RP beneficiary {NC]—Perhaps you didn’t think much about it when you opened ‘your RSP, but choosing the right benefi- ciary for your plan can save you a lot of trouble, and dollars, down the road, if anything should happen to you. The beneficiary of an R5P is the person who receives the assets in the event of the planholder’s death. When you open an RSP, ou’re asked to name a beneficiary (Quebec resi- -dents must make the desig- “nation in their will.) Often this happens ecrly in life, _perhaps when the person _is still single. Even though conditions may change ‘later, through marriage and the birth of children, many people don’t remem- ber to change the plan beneficiary. _ There are three types of RSP beneficiaries: . ‘Those who qualify for tax- sheltered rollovers. People in this group can rollover the assets from your RSPs into their own plan with no tax conse- quences. They can include ‘our spouse or an infirm child or grandchild who is ' Financially dependent upon you, IF you have a "financially dependent child er grandchild under 18, “the assets con be used to buy an annuity but it must . terminate by age 18. “Those who are not eligible for tax-sheltered rollovers. This covers everyone else, including your adult children. If you die, the assets of your RSP are deemed to have been taken as income in the final year of your life. Once income taxes have been assessed, the remain- ing portion passes to your heirs. Your estate. If your spause is the only beneficiary of your estate, the tax-shellered rollover is still available. However, including the RSP holdings in the estate makes them subject to probate fees and the transfer may be delayed until all the legal matters are settled. If you haven’t reviewed your RSP beneficiary recently, here are some recommended actions to take: * Find out who the desig- nated beneficiary is and make a change, if appropriate. ° Make sure your will is up-to-date and reflects your wishes in relation to your retirement plan. ¢ IF your spouse is the beneficiary and you divorce, be sure to change the plan designation as well as you will - News Canada Tell Tale Signs That Your Investment Advisor Has The Knowledge And The Experience To - Truly Help You With Your RRSP Investments David B.
