Survey finds
large support
for muitiplex

A LARGE majority of people surveyed at an open house
in September said they’d back the multiplex as proposed if
a referendum were held today.

The survey, released recently, found 78 per cent of the
159 respondents would vote for the multiplex based on the
information available to date,

“Considering the financial unknowns to dale (operating
costs and impact. on individual property taxes) this
represents solid grassrools support for the project within
the community,’’ concluded consultants Johnston Sport
Architecture,

A large number of respondents — 82 per cent — agreed
the programs and components to go into the centre reflect
the broadest community needs and aspirations.

And 87 per cent backed the decision to locate the multi-
plex on the arena hill, merged in with the existing pool and
arena,

When asked whether the capital cost for the project is
within acceptable limits, the ‘approval level dipped to 60
per cent, with 13 per cent saying no and 27 per cent un-
decided.

The consultants said many people at the cpen house said
they wanted to know where the tnoney would come from
and who were the potential capital partners.

The idea of building the project in slages was also raised
in the survey. Some ‘71 per cent said it should be built all at
once, while 21 per cent said it should be phased. The rest
