Gunter and Alley Lenardt, ‘‘the
herb people”’ at the Skeema Val-
ley Farmers Market, I hope you
had'a chance to check out their
herb products,

Thére’ are also a lot of wild
herbs. growing right around us.
Yarrow Tansy, Everlasting,
Solomon Seal, Mint, Chamomile
and ‘Skunk cabbage are just some
examples.

Spanish - Californians once
steeped yarrow leaves in water to
treat cuts and bruises and to stop
bleeding,

Tansy, a yellow cluster of buds
on a tall stem, can be used
sparingly in a salad. However,
Jarge amounts can make you very
sick and even cause death...... ....

The root of Solomon Seal pro-
vides a tonic and astringent. The
powdered root was applied to
bruises and tumerous
haemathoids to relleve the pain,

blue spots, gotten by falls or

can be found {in herbs. Mint
relieves cold headaches sickness
and heartburn. Chamomile has a

calming effect and is good for -

stomach upset, nervousness and
urinary tract infection, The sap
from. skunk cabbage was once
used: io treat ringworm, And
Dandelion is a blood purifier, and
general tonic.

Other remedies include:

Basil «for gastric problems
Bergamot -to induce sleep.
Parsley -as a general tonic and
diuretic

To dry herba cut them on a dry
day and hang them upside down
in bunches in a warm place.
Crumble leaves and store in
lidded jars in a Cool dark place,

Leave herb seeds ~ dill, fennel
and corriander - for example, to
ripen and go brown on the plant.
Tie bags over the over the seed
heads and hang them up to dry.

Most of the major culinary
herbs can be grown from seed,
They are both useful and decora-
tive, It is convenient to keep
planters, pots or small herb beds
close to the kitchen. :

Days at the Terrace Little Theatre
is more than cheap babysitting.

"We've got a murder mystery
day, a clown day, theatre games
and more planned,”’ says Joelle
Walker, one of four  post-
secondary students running the
course.

mer drama course for approxi-
