Park | Report . by James Roop res cd aera ie BCE Some of you may have heard of the Gitnadoix — 8.€, Parks recrea- tion area. It is 160 times the size of Lakelse Lake Provincial Park and is midway between Terrace and Prince Rupert. With the exception of a faw adventurous fishermen and big game hunters, the Gitnadolx is a land rarely frequented by humans. ‘Nestled in the Gitnadoix is Alastair Lake, a take the size of Lakelse Lake. The lake hosts strange and exotic species of animals. For exam- ple, trumpeter swan nesting sites can be found there. There ara only two other known trumpeter nesting areas in B.C. ; Furthermore, a rare sockeye spawns In the rivers here — but they remain silver, and do not change to the well known red colour during thelr upstream batile. ——- , “There are al sorts of reasons that we want to preserve this special area”, says John Trewhitt of B.C. Parks. “First of all, t is the only large park in the representative Jandscape of the Kitimat Mountain Range. It is possible that the entire lake and it’s watershed could be preserved and turned into parkland: a feat only twice belore accomplished in over 380 parks across our province.” In 1989, B.C. Parks underwent aerial surveys to obtain an understanding of the large mammal population in the Gitnadoix area, . Discussions with local fishermen are helping B.C. Parks roughly estimate the population ecology. of several fish species. ; The Gitnadolx is classified as a recreation area. This means that if cannot achieve full park status until current mining survey rights have expired in 1996. . During the years to come, B.C. Parks will use the Information obtaln- ed by the natural rasources Inventory to base management decisions to preserve the area. For more information on the Gitnadoix area, phone B.C.
