Community and Commercial
Tent wilk also host the First

: Nations and Metis Exhibition.

The Council for the Cultural :
Preservation of the Metis Peoples, is a non-political, non-
funded group dedicated to the preservation of the Métis culture
and their Peoples. The CCPMP holds a position on the
Aboriginal Education Committee, School District 68, and have
been active in the community in a variety of ways.

Over the years their activities have included Metis Voyageur ——

Days at High Schools, Aboriginal Days, Maple Sugar Festival,
Festival of Trees fundraiser for Malaspina University College
bursaries.

The term Métis refers to those people who were born.ofa. .
mixture of French and later Scottish fur traders and Aboriginal
women. During the French Era (1600-1760), intermarriage
between white traders and Aboriginal women was so common
that it is estimated that 40% of French-Canadians in Quebec
today can claim to have at least one Aboriginal ancestor.

The Royal Commission Report on Aboriginal Peoples outline
the many distinctive Métis communities across cannes, and
more than one Métis culture.
