Met PSLIMER TAS RVANS Fd red 1 Lt ~ gi- Those same residents at the southend of Hastings Street inform me that traffic congestion decreased immediately after the Kitchener Street traffic island was constructed. tn the Fercuary 18th letter from the residents of Clayton/Tuohey and Murchie, they proposed a 2 part solution to the traffic problem. 1. Close Patricia at Hastings, and 2. Open the Woodland/Kitchen er intersection. t am in favor of closing Patricia at Hastings but TI am also realistic enough to know that City Council must be convinced that a clear majority of residents are in favor of any read closures. To the residents of Clayton, Tuohey and Murehie, I gay this. No one expects you to tolerata the inereased traffic but please understand the importance of reducing both the volume and speed of traffic on Patricia and Hastings Streets. TI believe that City Couneil has taken the correct action in installing the traffic island on Kitchener Street. With the installation of the traffic island, we are more than halfway towards our eventual goal, reducing/discouraging commuter traffic. The removal of the traffic island is the wrong decision. That action would immediately satisfy the traffic problem on Clayton/Tuchey/Murchie but then encourage commuter traffic on Woodland/Patricia and Hastings. My suggestion to City Council is that there are realistic solutions to the Clayton/Tuohey/Murchie traffic problem. Direct the traffic committee to come up with recommendations that fairly address the concerns of all area residents. Some examples are no left hand turn signs and more stop signs. By referring this issue back to the traffic committee, City Council is not breaking their promise of last Monday but rather recognizing that the traffic island was a good idea in the first place and all that needs to he done is to find an additional means of deterring those persistent commuters using Clayton/Tuohey/Murchie. You ag a council made a positive step in the right direction by installing the traffic island on Kitchener Street. You have the opportunity tonight to solve the apparent conflict between the needs of the Clayton/Tuohey/Murchie residents and the needs of the Hastings/Patricia residents. wee /D
