Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 20, 2002 More letters An unbelievable MLA Dear Sir: I don’t believe or under- stand Roger Harris. Mr. Harris says he isn’t lying when he says he “considered voting no to Bill 29.” However, during the last provincial election, he and Gordon Campbell made a lot of promises that have turned out to be lies. Why should we be- lieve him now? M:. Harris says, “my principles were challenged.” Another word far challenged could be compromised. It has been my experience that people who are willing to compre- mise their principles in one situation will likely do it again. They soon don't have any. Mr. Harris' Liberal arro- gance is really showing when he thinks he has the right to dictate where un- ionized workers choose to spend their pay cheques. The contempt Mr. Harris, his government and his supporters have shown for unionized workers has consequences. Mr. Harris has part of it tight. It is about demo- cracy. We have a demo- cratic right to decide where to spend our pay cheques. As for his comment that local businesses are al- ready hurting — well — if he and his government hadn’t closed government offices and taken jobs out of our community there would have been a few more dol- lars to be spent in local shops. I do recall the chamber of commerce president saying she agreed with the Council in the dark on power Dear Sir: I simply cannot believe Terrace council’s reaction to Mr. Watmough’s pre- sentation about the impor- tance of B.C. Hydro to the well being of their com- munity, to our industries ' and to our province. To have councillors challenge the deregulation cost increase of 30 per cent suggests to me that the councillors can neither read nor hear. Thirty per cent is the number quoted in the Inde- pendent Power Associa- tion’s brief to the energy task force last December. The 30 per cent number has been printed repeated~ ly by The Province, by The Sun, by the Standard, and other papers, A raise, any raise, will affect the town, the schools, the residents, the mills, all government of-. fices, highways, radio sta- tions and newspapers. To ignore the possibility of a sale, given the recent record of this government, is folly. To refuse to second a motion of support so this item could be, at the very least, discussed shows the council’s absolute political | bias and almost total ig norance. Ken Belanger, Terrace, B.C. IPNa lise Norther Gas Lid DIVIDEND NOTICE NOTICE is hereby given that the Board of Diractors of Paciflc Northern Gas Lid. has declared that no quarterly dividends be pald on the issued and outstanding Class A Gammon Shares and Class B Common Shares of the Company: By Order of the Board David G. Unruh Secretary Vancouver, B.C., February 11, 2002 actions (job cuts) of this government so I'm net sure that the local people feel that they are hurting. I don’t understand how Mr. Harris can interpret our choosing where to spend miles business . Dear Sir: our pay cheques as show- ing a “lack of sense of - community” yet his deci- sion to take jobs away and cut services to the most needy is acceptable, Gail Murray, Terrace, B.C. billion tax breaks to the the most. vulnerable of It is extraordinary how, within a short year since being elected, the Liberal MLAs have reduced the ci- tizens who elected them to the status of “special in- (crest groups” so that when we complain about $1.5 jobs in our communities and the loss of services to missed, We expect better treatment than that. As the list of losses to services in our region grows longer and longer, it has become apparent that his Come and talk to us, Roger government will sacrifice our welfare, the health of our communities, because it costs more to. serve small northern towns. Our MLA, Roger Harris, has been invited to attend a public meeting where he will have the opportunity to explain to his constituents the impact of the budget cn our region. I urge Mr. Harris to take up this opportunity on Feb 24, 2 p.m. at the REM Lee Theatre.
