BIO - The Terrace Standard, Westpoint takes Mexicana Cup Terrace team blows away competition THE HEAT couldn’t stop them, and neither could the tequila. ; Terraces Westpoint mixed slow-pitch team sur- prised everyone two weeks ago by winning the Mazal- lan Mexicana Cup in sunny Mexico. The team headed south to the 12-team tournament, not knowing what to expect. But it didn’t take long for them to warm up, and pretty soon they were squashing teams from all over Canada and the U.S., “Everyone thought we'd get kicked,’ says player Mark Neid. “But slo-pitch is a hitting game and our bats were just on fire.”’ Westpoint started the tournament in a seceding match against the Calgary Fiascoes. Their 13-6 blowout victory put them into the tourney’s top divi- sion. Their next game was against San Francisco, and once again the team just couldn’t miss, winning 15- 8 That put them up against Saskaloon’s Field Jokers, Wednesday, March 4, 1998 MEXICANA MASTERS: That's Terrace's Westpoint mixed slo-pitch team, win- ners of the Mexicana Cup held in Mazatlan, Mexico recently, ae who proved no match for Westpoint. The locals took that one 13-2. The next game was a nail- biter, wilh Terrace playing the Coquitlam Stowaways. This one went back and forth, but ended in an 11-11 lic, Still, Westpoint’s un- defeated performance put them in the Championship Match against the Camrose Warriors. That game was 4 slaughter, with Westpoint playing like a team pous- sessed. Midway through, Terrace’s Fred Rutledge hit a monster grand slam home run that really knocked the wind out of the Warriors. **That was the last nail in the coffin’? says Neid. ‘They just got frustrated after that.’’ Terrace won 19-3. Westpoint’s Sherri Turner was named female all-star, and male all-star went to Willy Wilson. Mark Neid was named fastest male around the bases, while fastest female went to Kerry Paulis. Neid says the team couldn't have made the trip without extreme efforts by organizer Doug Richey. Westpoint expects ta be practicing locally sometime in March. They hope to have their first tournament of the year in May. Sport Scope El Nino Ciassic resumes WARM WEATHER and bare fields can only mean one thing — the return of the El Nino rugby classic. Res 4) Millionaires S$ Club $$ “Bonjour, Madeleine? C’est moi, Noella. Drop everything and come right over”. Two minutes laler, Madeleine arrived at Noella’s, coffee mug still in hand. The two women were friends and next door neighbours, Noella kissed Madeleine on both cheeks, “Madeleine. Sit down. I’ve just had a brilli- ant idea.” Madeleine sat down as she took anolher sip of coffee. “Madeleine, how old is Francois? “Four.” “Correct. Same age as my Sylvie, And they're both starting Grade 1 in two years.” ~ “C'est juste.” --- wee ny “Now, where is the nearest French school?” Madeleine rolied her eyes up to the ceiling. “28 kilometres!” she blurted oul. - Noella was triumphant. “Right on. It will take our two little children 1 hour a day to go to and from school.” , Madeleine looked horrified. “I hadn't thought about that. But there’s nothing we can do. It’s the only French school around.” Noella was determined. “Who said there’s nothing we can do? We are 34 French-speak- ing families in Summerside. Our children have aright to be taught in the official language of their birth, at a school in their own town,” “99?” “So this. Here is a list of all the French families and their telephone numbers. ‘You phone the first half, I'll phone the second. We're going to form a Society: ‘La Federation des Parents de ]’le-de-Prince-Edouard’, Our group will lobby the government to build a French school right in this town.” Six months later, the society consisting of 78 members, met in Noella’s finished basement. You BE THE JUDGE My language is my life, BY CLAIRE BERNSTEIN BASED ON ACTUAL COURT CASES They were sipping their espressos and biting delicately into their croissants when Noella stood up. “Welcome, Sad news. The government turned down our petition. They said the numbers didn’t justify (he expense.” A voice piped up from the back.. A waste of time tangling with government. I'm going to do what olher parents are doing. I’m going to send my child to English schoo! in the area to avoid the tiresome journey cach day.” Noell was determined. “Do what you want. But Madeleine and | are going, to take the government to court.” In court, Noella and Madeleine pleaded pas- sionately for their children. “Monsieur le Juge, the Charter gives our children the right to be educated in French. Thal means having a school in the area. It’s too much to ask young children to travel 28 kilometers to the closest school. A right that is so hard to exercise is no tight at all.” The government explained their position. “Your Honour, starting a school for 34 people is unreasonable and expensive. It’s too much to ask of taxpayers, Transportation is provid- ed to the other French school. This fulfills the Charter requirement. Should the government have to provide a French school in Noella’s area? You! Be The Judge. Then see below for the court's decision.
