B12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, January 10, 1996 First snowfall for Lena WELL, HERE WE are, al- ready into 1996, I hope everyone had wonderful Christmas. My best wishes to all for another year, and I ask for good health for everyone. My first story of the year is about winter, and about how exciting all this snow has been for a newcomer to Terrace in-particular. The first snowfall of the year always brings with it some excitement, but im- agine how you might feel if it was the first time in your life that you had seen snow. Well, that’s how it was for Lena Gagnon, and she de- scribed the experience as awesome, Lena is from Beleze in Central © America. She moved. ta Terrace six months ago with her hus- band Corey. He couldn’t wait to wash her face in the snow and make snow angels with her. Corey grew up in Terrace and his family lives here. But four years ago he moved to Belceze, where he met and married Lena three years aga. He brought Lena back to Terrace with him and now she works at the White Spot, She says she enjoys mecting new people every day. She loves the north with its snow and beautiful mountains, but misses her warm, sunny homeland, and of course here wonderful Mennonite family. Corey and Lena pian to retum to Beleze in a few years and iney hope to start YVONNE MOEN ~ a tourist business. Welcome to Terrace Lena, and yes, we think our mountains are beautiful too. kk kkk Since my article last month on Trumpeter Swans, Thave received a number of phone calls and comments on the swans in the area. I’d like to share with you one in particular — a letter I received from my good friend Les Watmough. He starts, I have enjoyed your article on the swans of Terrace and I have kept my own personal swan watch at “Mud Lake’ since 1961, My notes from 1970 show that there were 20 swans there on Nov. 1, and 50 there on the seventh of Nov. Last year there were 65 there, but this year a close count revealed 82 birds on Treston (Mud) Lake. Plus there were a further 14 birds al the site of the Hart Farm, and there were about 20 ad- ditional young in the flock. In those years I had some reluctance to identify them as Trumpeters so I wrote to February 10 & 11, 1996 LUCKY DOLLAR BINGO UNDAY JANUARY 1996 MONDAY PALACE TUESDAY * WEDNESDAY .. He replied and set out some ficld marks to help identify the birds, He also said that there were ‘‘no known nesting sites in B.c.” In 1960, while flying in the Gitnadoix valley with my brother, we observed a pair of Trumpeters with two cygnets, very young. The next year we were moose hunting on Sept, 1 up that same river and again saw two adults with two young, The following year the adults were still there, but there were no young. In 1963, Vic Bryant and I observed a pair of Trumpeters with four cyg- nets on the Kitsumkalum River. The cygnels were about a foot long and had no flight feathers, so had to 1 2 3 4 Cider of the Canadian 6 Fes & Kermode Terrace {_PevalPurele | Parayegic asec. | —-——— CLOSED | Friendship Blueback Terrace Nisga'a Tribal Parents for Frenchy Society Swim Club Anti-Poverty | Council-Tenace | Hospice Society ? ; Terrace 9 0 .
