It’s not easy to match the right gift with its re- cipient, not deplete your wallet, and feel good about your pur- chase. Christmas shopping is one of those activities that works better in theory than in -real life. "Do you ever wonder how ‘famous and rich and dignified ‘people do their Christmas shopping? Like, what does the Pope get his mother for Christ- ~ mas? I have trouble envisioning “the Pope standing in line at Woolworth’s with a pair of gardening gloves or ordering a ‘robe from the Sears catalogue. And then there’s the Prince Philip — what does he get for the Queen? Doesn’t she pretty much have it all already? That must be a real tough shopping expedition. t And what about Mother Theresa? Surely there’s a - relative standing in a depart- ment store somewhere, wonder- ing just what to get “Auntie” this year — wouldn’t you feel dumb handing her a pair of — slippers? ; ° Think about all the famous and wealthy people in this world, What would you get for - gld cousin Don, now-known as Donald Trump? (‘‘Gee, we - used to send books, but now .. that seems kinda cheap... ’’). Or maybe you usually send your nephew, Michael J. Fox, a scarf or some handkerchiefs, but now that he’s a famous movie star you’d feel a little silly doing that. There’s an endless list of Christmas shopp- ing problems out there.
