I see it... _ by Stephante: Wiebe - 1 have a startling revelation: for ecologists. You know how | .they’re always whining about non-biodegradable plastics and the garbage we produce that’s going to eventually cover the. . earth and smother us all? Well, I happen to know some: three, | four, and five-year-olds:who are diligently working to save us from this trashy demise. . These preschoolers, Brownies and small amateur craftsper- sons are creating valuable and © uséful things out of the very items ‘we might normally throw away. For example, those little plastic creamers you get in - restaurants. There’s probably millions of those small plastic cups thrown out every day, pil- ing up to clutter our world. Did you know that these can be covered with foil to become Christmas bell decorations, or turned into cute little bunnies with a little felt? It’s phenomenal what a preschooler can do with some scraps and glue. ; ee And those milk cartons and . jugs — do you realize what at- tractive bird feeders these can be made into? Giye the chil. dren some cotton wool, yarn, glue and scissors and they'll. soon produce a feeder that - ~ Jooks just like a milk carton covered with cotton wool and yarn. I have one hanging in my back yard, and it’s the envy of all my friends. Decapitated plastic dish detergent bottles can become interesting containers to hold “Cancer canvassers, gymnasts, - figure skaters express thanks — To the Editor; ° - We would like to take this op- portunity to thank the Terrace Jaycees for allowing us to host our pancake breakfast held at — ‘the arena banquet room during their annual Trades Fair. We would also wish to thank those local businesses who so generously donated the items necessary to make our event a huge success, Last but not least, we thank those residents of the communi- ty who came out to support us ; and enjoy a delicious breakfast. Kelly Yasinchuk, Terrace Figure Skating Club. To the Editor; The ‘Terrace unit residential Canadian Cancer Society April campaign has collected $7,961.18. That includes can- -vassing, coin cans and the daf- ‘fodil sales at the Terrace Co-op. Still to come are the mail drops. Due to lack of C.C.S. volunteers at the Terrace unit - level, a salute goes out to the Kitimat unit C.C.S. under Barb Campbell and her canvassers, who did the Terrace business section aspect of the campaign. Many thanks to the Terrace eyeglasses, buttons and ‘miscellaneous items. With a bit of paper mache, we have - decorative dolls and vases. I have something that’s either a cute doorstop or a huge _papetweight, I’m not sure. which, but it’s quite unique. Admittedly, toilet paper rolls are biodegradable, but imagine _ the waste if we merely burned them or allowed them to rot. The multitude of uses for these paper tubes is endless. We have toy binoculars, small appliance cord holders, Christmas tree decorations, and some unique necklaces, just to cite a few ex- amples. When I wear my toilet paper tube jewelry, I never fail to receive comments on my ap- pearance. The recycling efforts of these little tots should not go un- recognized. Yet we constantly hear about how wasteful and polluting we are as a species, never hearing the disclaimer, ‘with the noted exception of three, four, and five-year-olds everywhere.”’ I suspect that this would change if the preschools, kindergartens and Brownie troops began an ‘‘Adopt an Ecologist”? program, Send in the-name and ad-.. dress of your favorite ecologist, - and we will ensure that he or ~ she is bombarded with some of © the best examples of recycling ‘efforts from our local young folk. I wonder who should get my blue styrofoam egg carton caterpiller... canvassers and to the people who donated, so we can all live in hope that a cure for cancer is around the corner, Also, the families of cancer patients and the patients them- selves can benefit from services that the trained Canadian Cancer Society volunteers can offer. This is through the Emergency Aid, the Reach to Recovery (women with breast cancer), the Can Surmount (peo- ple with other types of cancer), and the educational programs. ‘Lily Nielsen, President, Terrace C.C.S, unit, To the Editor; On behalf of the Terrace Peaks Gymnastic Club, ‘Il. would like to thank the local businesses. who gave their support in our re- cent championship. . ~ We would like to thank Bob Wilkinson for his help with our program and his support throughout the year. I would like to thank all the people in the Club who helped us organize this championship and the people in the community who are supporting us by buying bricks to raise funds for our gymnasium. Thank you Terrace for your support. Lorraine Jordan, Tertace, A Terrace resident Elaine Cooley took a unique approach to canvassing for the Multiple Sclerosis Society during the Carnation Campaign — she used her horse Gambler to get ‘ around the Gossan Creek subdivision. She said she and the _.. horse were well-recelved by the folks on her route. “The: | ‘+ kids thought It was neat,” she said. Local results for the - - Carnation Campaign haven't been tallied yet.
