NWCC board optimistic for ‘88 _ The most recent meeting of the Northwest Community Col- lege board resulted in an op- _ timistic look at 1988, by Philip Musselman The president’s report detail- ed two donations to the college of equipment for the mechanical: training department. A new automobile has been received ‘from Ford and will be used for practical training for potential mechanics on new models, The other donation of a new power saw will also, be utilized by the mechanical ‘department - for, more experience with the newest in equipment repairs. - The last item of the president’s report involved the postponement of a visit by three Thailand professors in Novem- ber, The visit will now occur in February. The professors will be observ- ing the Prince Rupert campus’ marine programs. The board members then ex- pressed optimism and satisfac- tion about the board retreat in October. Positive reports by all _ Privatization — them a long time and knew the ‘choke and bleed’? policy they used on contractors, so we took the machinery, sold it and split up the money, That is how it is done. Mr. Parker’s remarks in recent ar- ticles in the:local papers reveal that is the program to be used with the Highways. Mr. Vander Zalm is saying, ‘‘Highways workers, buy us out, we will give you a contract,’ He doesn’t say for how long. One year. Two years. There has to be a time limit for a contract to be renew- ed, Even marriage contracts ter- minate at ‘‘til death do us part”’, When the contract expires you bid lower than low, give up the pensions, the reasonable wages, the overtime provisions, and revert right back to the ‘‘sweat shop”’ if you want to under-bid the next guy. Did that happen with Westar? Just ask the contractors. In fact, there was a recent report on the ‘tube’ about the desperate straights that these contractors are in. They went to subbing out, and to labor contracts until the B.C. labor law caught up with them, Lo How many went broke? How many bills did they leave un- board members expressed the ef- fectiveness of taking the college’s future to a broader out- . look. The college is presently work- '. ing on an internal evaluation, due in March of 1988. Meetings will be held at all NWCC loca- : '- °. ~ group will consist of approx- tions during February. The meeting also saw results from the six-month statements. According to Bursar George Harris the college has approx- imately $500,000 in non-com- mited funds which should last . for the next six months. The col-' ‘Tege has’ a net budget of $7. million this year, which com- pares to a $6.4 million budget in 1986-87. Se Also, according to Harris $200,000 in capital allocations has been commited to computer equipment advancements for all programs. . Another item of the meeting involved the appraisal of a site in Smithers and the submittal of a building plan to be sent. to the Ministry of Advariced Educa-. tion and Job Training. The plan consists of a 6,000 square foot ‘continued from page 4 | paid? Like, WOW. One major ‘contractor, brought in from! Prince George to replace the union, left so many subcontrattors high and dry, without nioney, Stewart thought the tide had gone out early, Ask the Mayor of Terrace how many cases of ‘default on debts incurred” his law office processed, We told the merchants (and I tell them again) we are the first . ones to feel this, but you will feel it too. When you see a Westar (or Highways) cheque, you know it’s good. What do you know about Joe Blow Gyppo? Is his cheque good (drawn on a bank in Klemtu)? Will he ever pay you? Will you ever see him again? You people know — how many of you are holding bad debts after the privatizing of Westar? . Westar was peanuts, but it was the testing ground. The Highways department locally is about one-half the payroll Westar was, but the multiplier province-wide makes them a major player. In order to -hold a contract on highways, . continued. on page 27 facility to be built on a one-acre ‘lot. The plan should provide room for six to seven classrooms. and administration space.
