A treat in Filipino culture One of the gala events of the weekend was the Filipino-Canadian night at the Oddiellows Hall Saturday night. It was:a taste treat for those who- attended. The dinner, dance and entertainment was sponsored by the Filipino- Canadian Association of: Terrace-Kitimat. The organization was formed in August of 1979. with the objectives of preserving the Filipino culture, while uniting it with the Terrace-Kitimat com- munity. The evening's menu began with cocktails and appetizers of Kropek - (pastel colored flowerettes of pork rinds), Chinese § aeese and. assorted pic Some of the” main courses were Pancit Bihon| (similar to chow mein); Chicken Adobo (chicken in soy sauce); Lapu-Lapo. (fish dish in sweet and sour); and fried Lumpia (similar to egg rolls). The main course was followed by desserts of Hopia (a type of tart filled with minced mongi beans) ; sweet rice cakes; and banana cake. The evening’s en- tertainment featured several Filipino dances. First was a number called Polka in the Rice Fields. It was followed by Itik-Itik (the duckling dance) ; and the candle dance, per- formed by Petra Silab, Cres Rosario and Edna Cachero of Prince Rupert. A hula dance was pet- formed by Evangeline Gabas and Sheila Monti of Kitimat. The most entertaining part of the evening was the public participation in the Tinikiing (Bamboo) Dance, where the guests were invited to try their agility by dancing bet- ween: moving bamboo. canes on the floor. Dancers Jimmy Valdez, Rie Fernando, Lydia Kusch and Emy Gill were easily distinguishable as the experts.
