And at home here in B.C. a “great
crusade against Communism’”’ was of-
ficially launched last week, when one
J. Farley Faulkner labored mightily
and brought forth the first “Citizens’
Committee” seen in these parts for
many moons to preserve our dollar-de-
signed “way of life.”

It appears that during the recent
visit of the Vefy Rev. Hewlitt Johnson,
Dean of Canterbury, to Toronto to speak
for peace, J. Farley Faulkner attempted

.to incite a bit of disruption, with the

idea in mind of preventing the Dean
from speaking, and a Canadian audi-
ence from hearing what he had to say.
When the ushers in charge of the meet-
ing firmly :escorted Faulkner outside,
that worthy draped upon himself a
martyrdom which he now hopes toycash
in on by the creation of an organization
to combat progressive ideas.

Press reports indicate that Faulkner’s
anti-Communist league sponsors include
the Vancouver Kiwanis Club, “leading
churchmen,” businessmen and _ other
“plain citizens.” Even Vancouver alder-
men R. K. Gervin and Birt Showler are
listed among those pledged to give
Fearless Farley “strong moral support.”

Far be it for us to lecture the Kiwanis
or other doughty warriors of the Faulk-
ner brigade on their stupidity in being
taken in on such a project. Mussolini,
Hitler and Hirohito started off with
their “Ant%Comintern Pact” — and
wound up rather disastrously. Even
Hirohito, the luckiest of the three, had
to swap his “Son of Heaven” toga for
sufficient Yankee dollars and bayonets
to save him from the wrath of _the
Japanese people, while all the little
Hitlers then and since have had to make
a more-or-less hurried and undignified
exit.

Even in the USA where McCarthy .

of government policy, the witch-hunters

are finding the going getting tougher —

all the time. People just don’t take
kindly to gag-rule thought - eontrol,
whether it is administered by a gov-
ernment or a “crusading” witch-hunting
mob, whose ideas of and about Commun-
ism are as haywire as Arnold Webster's
concept of socialism. ~

As for the “moral support” tendered
by “labor” aldermen Gervin and Show-

communism”’—that won’t amount to.a
great deal either way. Whenever those
two aldermanic *proteges of, the Non-
Partisan outfit have anything to say on.
matters pertaining to progress, ‘it is
generally in opposition. But with mil-

ject X,” there is no doubt the Faulkner
*“erusaders” expect to make their enter-
prise a profitable one. As Lenin said

The people's verdict

HE first count in the provincial elec-
tions this week indicates a return
of the Social Credit government of
Premier W. A. C. Bennett, with the
CCF again a close contender for office.

Although the first count is still in-
complete it is already evident that
Social Credit’s present lead in 26 seats
may be cut down by second, third, and
possible fourth-choice votes. Only four
Social Crediters and two. CCFers are
conceded election so far. Further
counts, to start June 30, may produce
a Socred-CCF party standing similar to
the last legislature, but with the Social
Credit majority slightly improved.

One fact emerges from the heavy
vote for the CCF, notwithstanding the
Harold Winch debacle: the people of
this province have definitely written
finis to the senior Liberal and Con-
servative parties of big business, CCF
strength in the working class areas also
shows that labor is not prepared to ac-

cept Social Credit as an alternative to
the discredited old-line parties.

While the Liberals, stimulated some-
what by the advent of Laing as a new
leader: made a strong effort at a come-
back, their vote in all. probability will
make little difference to their repre-
senation. The present indication is
that they may not even hold their
standing of six in the last legislature.

The overall vote indicates something
else. In the event of another Social

Credit. government, the people are in
no mood for a continuation of the nar-
row partisan wrangling which charac-
terized the brief lifetime of the last
legislature, and which reached an un-
precedented high tempo on the hust-
ings in partisan mud-slinging, charges
and counter charges. The people want
to get things done which will benefit
them and their province,

The comparatively small vote re-
ceived by candidates of the Labor-Pro-
greSsive party is by no means a rejec-

- tion of the Widespread popularity ac-

corded the LPP and its program dur-
ing the campaign. (In most cases the
LPP vote was well ahead of the Chris-
tian Democrats, Independents, and in
Vancouver East, of the Tories). In
the minds of most peoplé, regardless
of how they voted, the LPP program
placing peace, trade, jobs and social
security as the fundamental issues af-
fecing the people of B.C. remained the
basic objective of their voting. That
fact should not be ignored by the
Social Credit or the CCF in their as
yet undecided roles in the next legis-
lature.

The final results will not be known
unil the beginning of July. But the
will of the people was made known on
June 9 — less demagogy, less partisan
politics, and a legislature which will
serve the people rather than narrow
partisan interests,

and wife, victims of an “atomic
spy” frameup, tried and sentenced
in an atmosphere of insane hysteria,
hate and perjury.

Reason, conscience, decency —
every element that places civilized
man above savage beasts, confirm
the Rosenbergs’ innocence of the
fantastic charges placed against
them. But the dollar warmongers
demand sacrificial victims to their
war hysteria. These rulers of Am-
erica demand the Rosenbergs “con-
fess,” as the price of their lives...

and the innocence of its victims.

Thus the death sentence, as in
the Middle Ages, becomes a prime
weapon of executive torture to ex-
tort “confessions” from its victims
ra a means of saving its own hideous
ace.

If human morality and justice are -
to survive, the lives of Julius and
Ethdl Rosenberg must be saved.
World indignations and protest
must win for them the civilized
right to establish their innocence in
a court where law takes precedence
over witch-burning hysteria.

It will serve humanity better if

the moral lepers who seek to destroy
the Rosenbergs are exposed to world
contempt, than that two innocent
people should be murdered for the
purpose of covering up a montrous
infamy.
