Alderman Thompson referred to those Committees, specifically the Recreation Building Conmittee, appointed prior to the establishment of the 1y¥73 Council, and ‘inquired whether or net they would-be continued for the ensuing year. His Worship the Mayor, speaking in respect of the Recreation Bui "ding Committee, advised that he intended to appoint new members, aad that he would be commenting on the matter later this evening. | Alderman Laking advised he would. be unable to attend the Coquitlam & Distr- ict safety Council's annual meeting to be held on January 17th,-1972 at 7:30 p-m.; and stated he hoped some other member of Council would be in a position to attend in his place;.however, His Worship the Mayor and Aldermen advised they were otherwise committed on that date. ; Alderman Traboulay then proposed the following motion: Movea by Alderman Traboulay: . ~ Seconded by Alderman Thompson: That: the: Board of School Trustees of School District: No. 43 (Coquitlam) be requested to extend the use of lay school patrols at school crosswalks in Port Coquitlam where no eudent school patrol is employed, | Priot. to the question being called on. the foregoing resolution,. Alderman Traboulay spoke to the subject. and stated his view that the. School Board be re- quested to extend the use of lay patrols where ‘school crosswalks are located and not manned vither by student or lay patrels. - Alderiian Ranger advised that this subject had previvusly come before the Traffic Committee; however, the School ‘ Board advised they were trying to phase out this service. Alderman Laking advi- sed that principals in this area indicated they did not wish to havs their stu- dents involved in school patrols, and as far as adult: patrols are concerned, the School Board does not. pay them; and, therefore, they do net get involved. Alder- man Ranger. pointed. out that some people are of the opinion they are putting them- selves at a risk by acting as crosswalk guards, and Alderman Laking advised that the municipality has tea hire and pay for lay patrols. ‘Alderman Mabbett stated the matter was extensively investigates three or four times in previous years, and commented he could not understand how schovl principals have the exclusive right to determine whether or not they are going to-have patrols.
