to light up 4H barn IN ACCORDANCE with the 4-H motto, “Learning to da by doing,” several local club members are learning about animals by raising them. Naomi Peters, a club fea- der and member of the ex- eculive, is raising three such clubbers - and has another child well on her way. ; Heré son Andrew raises poultry and eldest daughter Jessica ‘rears horses as well'as the barnyard birds. Elizabeth, the middle daughter of three, raises rab- bits. She plans to enter a tawny Holland Lop, Cindy, and her eight offspring in the Satur- day morning Fall Fair rabbit show - both in the 4-H and open classes. Currently Elizabeth is prepping her bunnies for show, cleaning their ears and clipping their toe nails; Also, as part of her show preparation, she must spend several quality hours with -Cindy. “One of the keys to showing a rabbit is spending time with the rabbit every day,” Naomi said. "Is the time of working with them and teaching them to stay calm.” u vu A WEBSITES TO SEE: ELIZABETH PETERS will be at the rabbit barn at the Skee- na Valley Fall Fair this weekend with her bunny Domino. In open class the judge simply opens the cages and critiques each rabbil. But in 4-H competilion, each entrant must handle their rabbit, present if to the judge and demonstrate knowledge on the topic of rabbits in general. While the club doesn’t put a large emphasis on winning, Elizabeth is still aiming for the blue ribbon. “That’s my goal this year,” Elizabeth said. “Not the winning part, just success.” Lucky for Elizabeth and olher entrants, the rabbit barn begun before last year’s competition has just been completed. “The rabbit barn’s ready for rabbits this year,” said Barb Adams, organizer of the show for the second time. Overall three shows —- 4- "A, youth fun and open class ~ will go on in the rabbit barn this year. Adams expects about 60 to 80 rabbits in the barn. for the various competitions. “There'll be Guinea Pigs in there, too,” she added, “which will make life kind of fun.” Adams said that cross- bred rabbits are eligible for competition as well — not just purebred as in some compe- titions. “We're encouraging people with pet rabbits to enter.” Jan Gosen, a judge from Victoria, is being flown in for the event. He’s a registrar for the American Rabbit Breeders Association, and will enter some rabbits of his own. He raises English Lops and Guinea Pigs, or Cavies.
