Twas the night before Christmas

‘Twas the nighi before Christmas, when all inrough the
house

Noi a creature was stirring, nol even a mouse.

The stockings were hung by the chimney wilh care

In hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there.

The children werenesiled all snug in their beds,

While visions of superplums danced in thelr heads.
And Mamma inher kerchlef, and | in my cap
Had just se 1.1 down for along winter’s nap,
When out on the fawn there arose such a claller,
I sprang from my bed to see whal was the mailer.
Away lo the window | flew like a
Tore open ihe shutter, and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snaw
Gave a luster of midday Io objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
Bul a miniature sleigh, and eigh! tiny reindeer.
Wiha litleald driver so lively and quick,

1 knew Ina moment it must be Sain! Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they cante,
And he whisi led and shavied and called them by naine.
“Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and
Vixen! :

On, Come?! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blizen!

To the top of the porch, !o the top of the wall !

Now, dash away! Dash away! Dash away, all!”

As dry leaves thal before the wild hurricane fly,

When they mee! wilh an obstacle, mount to ‘he shy.

So up ta the housetop the coursers they flew

With a slrigh full of loys and Saint Nicholas, !oo.

And then ina iwinkling | heard on theroof

The prancing and pawing of each liltle hoof.

As I drew in my head and was !urning around,

Down the chimney Saint Nicholas came with 4 bound.
He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foo".

And his clothes were all jarnished with ashes and soo:.
Abundle af toys he had flungan his back, .

And he looked like a peddier just opening his pack.

His eyes—how they twinkled! His dimples- how
merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose jikea cherry!

His droll ttle mouth was drawn up like a bow.

And the beard on his chin was as while as "he snow.
Thesiump of a pipe he held fight In his teeth,

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.

He hada broad face and around [itile belly .
That shook when he laughed, like a bow! full of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, aright jolly aldelf.

And | laughed when (saw him in splie of myself.
Awink of his eye and a twisi of his head

Soon gave meio know 1 had nothing lo dread.

He spoke not a word but went slraight tohis work,

And filledall the stockings ; then iurned with a jer,

And taying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney herose.

He sprang oh Is stelgh, fo his eam gave 3 whistle,
And away they all flew like ihe downof a thistle.

But | heard him exelalm ere he drove au! of sight.
