Northwest fire crews now returning AFTER A ‘summer travel- ling around B.C. and Cana- da to put out fires, the area’s forest service firefighters are finally back at their bases. The 20-person unit crew from Kitimat returned from southern B.C. Aug. 15 after rain dampened the fire situ- * ation in the Spences Bridge area. . A three-person initial at- tack crew spent a brief time in. the Kootenay area of B.C., returning Aug. 17 af- ter working on multiple fires in Grand Forks. . Crew member contracts have been extended from Aug. 19 to Aug. 26 and they could stay on longer if nec- essary, depending upon the start of more fires in south- ern B.C. caused by hot and dry weather. The number of fires in the province this year has been much lower than last year; the 815 fires this year are less than half of last years 2,237. fires.
