Edmonton resident fined
for buying Skeena salmon

EDMONTON RESIDENT
Barry Deane Wasylyszyn
has been fined $12,000 for
illegally importing tainted
salmon from Kitwanga.

Wasylyszyn pleaded
guilty to knowingly trans-
porting and selling conta-
minated fish at a recent
court case in Stony Plain,
Alberta.

: He admitted to buying
the salmon from an indi-
vidual in-the Kitwanga
area,

Wasylyszyn said he
knew the person was fish-
ing under an aboriginal
communal licence that did
not authorize the sale of
salmon. -

As a direct result of the
case, David Alexander of
Kitwanga has been

charged with the unauthor-
ized sale of salmon.

After receiving a tip in
August 2001, conservation
officers detained Wasylys-
zyn near Edmonton as he
returned from a reported
fish-buying trip.

An inspection of his ve-
hicle revealed 182 whole

sockeye salmon and num-
erous wrapped packages of
smoked and dried fish.

A food quality test
showed the smoked fish
was unfit for human con-
sumption and was rife with

high levels of E.Coli and-

fecal coliform bacteria.

rence, and fisheries offi-
cials say their B.C. offices
receive an average of Iwo
complaints about it a day.

Armed robber sought

TERRACE RCMP spent the weekend
looking for the person who held up the
Coast Inn of the West liquor outlet late in
the afternoon of June 7,

Police say a lone male brandishing a

knife forced the teller of the store to hand

over approximately $300 in cash. The
teller was alone in the store,

Police believe the man had entered
the store approximately one hour earlier,

but was scared off by. a customer,
Police describe the robber as a white

male, around 30 years of age. He has a -

shaved “head, slim:build and is roughly
five feet, six inches high. The man was
wearing blue jeans and a green kangaroo
jacket with an attached hood.

RCMP ask those with information to
call them at 638- 7400, or Crimestoppers
at 635-8477. ot
