Page B10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 3, 1993 Myths of margarine - ANY PEOPLE are becoming more aware about how the foods we cat can help our health. Choosing a healthy margarine is just one of the healthy choices we can make in the marketplace. We're faced with a slaggering array of products. And many of ihem are screaming from their labels that they have “No Cholesterol’? or “Low Saturated Fat’. How can we sort through this array of products, and see if the choice we make is a healthy one? The answer to this question is (as you might guess) fairly simple. You'll need a bit of in- formation from the label, but then it’s really easy to choose a healthy margarine, There's lots of great healthy choices on the market, so you may want to try a number of dif- ferent margarines, until you find one that suits your particular taste. The easiest way of choosing a healthy margarine is te check (he ingredient list. The margarines with the lowest saturated fat con- tents will all have liquid vegeta- ble oil as their first ingredient. Not Not “hydrogenated ail’? or “hydrogenated and for liquid. oil’’, but plain and simple: liquid oil, Some may. have the specific plant mentioned, like “‘liquid canola ail” or “liquid com oil”, If you're a real numbers junkie, you can look at the ratio of un- saturates to saturates. Look for a margarine that has the amounts of different types of fats listed on the label. Jt might be on the lid, or on the side panel. If the information isn’t listed, it’s a good indication that — the margarine isn’t one of — the healthier choices,. Advertlsers tend to give people the good in- formation, but they also tend to hold back the bad news. Now the question is: Why are these margarines healthy choices? _ The cholesterol in your blood comes, from two main sources: The first is from the cholesterol in foods that you eat, But this only” makes up about 20 per cent (or 1/5) of the cholesterol in our blood. About 80 per cent of the cholesterol in your blood is cholesterol that you make your- self, You make it in your liver, like all other animals. That’s why only animal foods have cholesterol in them, Plants don’t sirloin | | & . pan tied. (egalicions ; . And what do we make all of this cholesterol! out of? Out of the fat that we eat. So the less fat that you eat, the less raw material your body has to make cholesterol. That’s why the most important’ cholesterol rule is: EAT LESS FAT. It’s this eat-less-fat mile that’s good news for the butter lovers in the crowd. That’s because a little bit of butter is a healthier choice than a whole fot of margarine. But what about the diet margarines? These can be healthier choices, but it all depends on how you use them. If you think “Hey, it’s dict margarine, 1 can use Iots!’’ and spread it on three times as thick, then it’s probably not a healthier choice. Diet margarines are made with about one-half water, so they can’t be used in any cooking or heating. -}WEATHER WATC Kor recorded weather in- formation firom-Envirdnment ‘ Canada, call 635-4192, @ Burning one--litre of LAST Max, Min, Snow Sun WEEK Temp.
