A8 Terrace Review — Wednesday, April 4, 1990 LETTERS TO — THE EDITOR: - Birthright informs readers To the Editor; . The number of worthwhile volunteer organizations in- creases daily; therefore, I’d like to acquaint your readers with a group called Birthright, which I believe is particularly deserving of wider public knowledge and Support, . The Terrace chapter of this in- ternational organization is a group of volunteers whose main function is to offer support to young women who are in dis- tress because of pregnancy. This support may take the form of in- formation about available public assistance programs, con- fidential pregnancy testing, shelter homes, maternity or baby clothes or, perhaps most important, a concerned listener who cares about her when she may feel that no one else does. We encourage good prenatal care through local physicians. Birthright is a non-denomina- tional, non-profit organization. We are supported by ‘(tax- deductible) contributions from the public‘and by our own fund- raising activities. We believe that pregnant young women deserve whatever assistance they need to carry their pregnancies to term and to make their own best deci- sions for their future and that of their babies. The local office of Birthright is staffed’ six morn-' ings a week, and the phone number is 635-3907. Outside of office hours a recorded message provides the numbers of volun- teers available to discuss pro- blems any time. Festival thanks To the Editor; On behalf of the Pacific Northwest Music Festival com- mittee, I would like to express our thanks to the many people and organizations who helped to make our 25th Anniversary Fes- tival a success. Without the many hours of assistance do- nated by willing volunteers and the financial support of our award donors and patrons, our task would be impossible. We are also very grateful to School _ District 88 and the Pentecostal, Alliance and Knox United Chur- ches for their co-operation and assistance. | A special thank-you goes to the many competitors, their parents and teachers for their ef- forts which resulted in entertain- ing performances of such high calibre, and to the members of the community who showed their support of these young per- formers by attending the various classes. Finally, thanks to you and your staff for your co-operation in helping us make the com- munity aware of the events tak- ing place at our Festival. i . Jo Falconer Publicity chairperson Terrace, B.C. Any readers who are in- terested in helping with the work of Birthright, donating baby or maternity clothing or assisting us financially can phone the above number for more infor- mation. We are grateful for this opportunity to make our group known to the community. Karen L. Enriquez ' ‘Secretary Terrace, B.C. Stop speeding An open letter to Members of Terrace City Council: This letter is in reference to the speed limit on our city streets located near churches. I live on Scott Avenue at Eby across from the Terrace Pentecostal Church and over the years the traffic has increased here significantly. However, traffic turning down Scott does so at a high speed and cars continue to ac- celerate even past my house, which is 100 meters from Eby Street. More than once I have witnessed near-accidents. There are many people walking in this area for various reasons, one of which is the Church events hap- pening day and evening. If speed violations continue to occur in this area, something tragic will happen. A suggestion: lower the speed limits near chur- ches and post signs to this effect as is done near school zones. Please take a close look at this problem before something tragic happens. John Heighington Terrace, B.C. Mothers March tops goal — To the Editor; ; This letter is just to inform you we have a final figure for Mothers’ March for 1990 for our area. The total figure to date is $14,504.70, up $979.70 over last year. I would like to thank you again for your contribution and look forward to working. together in 1991. Robert Finlayson, Mothers’ March Chairman 1990, Terrace, B.C. January 15 to 31 35 YEARS OF SERVICE An open letter to: Telephone Employees _ Community Fund people suffering from schizo- phrenia. This summer, July 15-18, an International Conference of Dear Telephone Employees; Your donation... of.$150, received at our March meeting, is deeply appreciated by all members of the Terrace Friends of Schizophrenics, and we thank’ you from the bottom of. our hearts for your support of our cause. , As you know, we are striving to increase public understanding of the tragic illness of schizo- . phrenia, which strikes mainly . young people in their late teens and destroys their chances for a productive and happy life. Until recently our government con- tributed very little to schizo- phrenia research, even though -one percent of the world’s population is stricken by this ter- tible disease and schizophrenics accupy more hospital beds than diabetics, heart disease patients, cancer and arthritis sufferers combined. Through our advocacy the provincial government’s aware- ness of the devastating effects of schizophrenia on the people of this province, not just healthwise, but also productive- ly and economically, has greatly increased. Last spring, when the University of British Columbia included in its fundraising cam- paign an effort to raise money . for a special Chair for schizo- prenia research, the government pledged to match every doliar raised by us with a provincial grant. UBC hoped‘ to raise $250,000; the Friends of Schizo- prenics pledged to raise, $50,000 per year for five years, totalling $250,000; the government’s con- tribution would then be $500,000, to create the necessary endowment fund of $1,000,000 in total. Due to fundraising ac- tivities of our branches and sup- port groups, which have grown since 1987 from 13 to over 30 in B.C., and some extra-large private donations, the endow- ment fund has been established earlier than expected and the research Chair is secure. Each year the interest from the fund will cover salaries and expenses to support the research of the professor holding the Chair. We, the friends and families of schizophrenics, are encourag- ed by the fact that intense and continued research into the causes and treatments of schizophrenia is now a reality. But we all know that huge amounts of money are needed, in order to have a chance for a cure. Many millions of dollars were raised over the years for cancer research, especially through the heroic efforts of Terry Fox, and a cure is still only a hope. Therefore, fundraising .-, for schizophrenia research has ' to go.on, and every donation is warmly, appreciated. Another - "one of your objectives is to ob- ’ “tain good, subsidized housing, with home support services, for our chronically ill. A third goal is an Achievement or Drop-In Centre, which is also badly need- ed in Terrace. In some places in the lower mainland these goals have been realized and are con- tributing significantly to. social and vocational rehabilitation of __ world class is going to be held in Vancouver, B.C. It is called ‘Schizophrenia 1990: Poised For Discovery’ and will be attended by internationally known psychiatrists, scientists and pro- fessional people, to address the major areas of schizophrenia research and the applicability of — its findings to treatment and To the Editor; I wish to compliment your reporting staff on its accurate and thorough articles. Recently there have been unfounded com- plaints toward a Clarence Michiel Grade 6 teacher, mostly from one parent and her friends. This person has a history of complaints against teachers in other schools, also seemingly without solid basis on facts. As your article stated, there are no Year 2000 experimental classes at our school, group pro- jects are as old as our present school curriculum, and the em- rehabilitation. We anticipateim- portant results from this event and hope that it will bring us — another step closer to our ultimate goal, a cure for schizo- phrenia. © Again, many thanks to. you . Public thanks to Telephone Employees all! A tax deductible receipt will | be forwarded to. you as soon as possible. Oo Elly Kardamylakis Branch Representative Terrace Friends of Schizophrenics _ Happy with son’s school phasis is placed on individua work in this class. 1 am not a whole-hearted sup- * porter of the new upcoming cur- riculum, ‘either. So let’s not at- tack the old system, let’s find out what we can do with the new one, We don’t need people mak- ing up problems, there’s enough trouble understanding the real ones our children will be facing. There is no wrongdoing in this class. I am happy with my son’s progress in Clarence Michiel, and see no reason for this at- tack. Janice Smith Terrace, B.C. service.
