TERRACE _ Upon grad- uation from Caledonia Senior Secondary School in 1981, Janet Mostad is . on her way to becoming an established artist in the field of weaving. " -by Daniele Berquist ‘What I-find appealing about weaving,'’ reveals Mostad, ‘‘is taking threads and interlacing them to make an actual piece of fabric.”” The first. piece of tapistry Mostad. made was a seascape while ‘attending Skeena Junior Secondary. ‘‘I had taken a textile course which was . offered to Grade 9’s and found it most fascin- ating,’’ said the young ar- tist. During the past several years Mostad has taken a private workshop and has done some work on her. own. After her graduation at Caledonia, Mostad said she knew that weaving would be something she would want to pursue asa . career, . The artist then decided to pursue her ambitions by taking a weaving and tex- tile course in Vancouver which included pottery, fabric printing, drawing, - designs, spinning, and dyeing. Mostad said the course was tough since to graduate, a student had to pass pottery. Upon com- pleting part of the course, Local artist achieves recognition for her father, Dr. J.C. Friday, the artist then attended the Alberta College of Art located in Calgary. ‘‘I took a four-year program and learned a lot,”’ said Mostad. During her summer in Alberta, this young en- trepreneur took a post at a summer camp as craft director. In between schools, Mostad worked Mostad, local dentist. Mostad was honored by the Terrace Art Associa- tion in displaying a private showing of her work on Jan. 9, 1987. “Special guests were in- vited,’* said Mostad, ‘‘and I think it’s terrific.’’ It was a real honor for me, she added. Mostad is hoping this private showing of all 31 pieces of her work to date will enable her to pursue her career with incentive. “I also hope: that. this show will guide me to a wider market and that my work will support me financially.”’ Mostad’s art ranges from wall hangings, ‘clothing, functional pieces of table runners, to pillows and gallery pieces. TERRACE — The Ter- race Branch of the B.C. Heart Foundation will be canvassing earlier in February this year. by Philip Musselman Heart month will begin with the canvassing drive this year to avoid conflict with other canvassing. The organization is hop- ing to raise four million dollars in B.C, and the local branch is planning on collecting about $23,000 from its sup- porters in Terrace. - The .group will be holding a wine and cheese get together for canvassers to pick up their kits on Sunday, Jan. 25 at the ’ ‘Inn of the West at 2 p.m. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. ; The foundation will have a table in the Skeena Mall this month to pro- . vide education to those who wish to learn more about heart disease.
