t | Bill Bennett Yes, | think that | would be willing to separate my garbage because | feel that recycling is a worth while endeavor. ™~ Jean Strangway I think it would be an excellent Idea to sort trash for pick-up, especially if recycling was done. — ¥ | TTS) CT e o The Terrace Review asked: Would you be willing to sort your household trash into separate categories if this system would enable the city to recycle portions of waste such as glass, paper and cans? Frances Knull Yes, | would gladly sort out my trash if it was to be recycled. | think that this type of idea Is long overdue. It would definitely be a step in the right direc- tion for the litter cam- paign. In Edmonton they already have such a system, and they even recycle old liquor bottles. “this type.of idea is long overdue.” Margo Hayes | don’t think that it would be too much trouble to separate trash into separate categories. | think that this would be a very efficient way of not wasting re-usable materials. Recycling depot may expand The city of Terrace recently approved a five- year conditional lease of its property at 2801 Evergreen. by Philip Musselman The lease will be given to Harry Sharyk, who will continue to operate his recycling business in the building. As far as fall goes, Sharyk said he will do some before- winter renovations to the ceiling and walls to help keep the heat in. Further renovations, he said will be done after winter. The recycling will in- clude aluminum cans, and glass will be ac- cepted for resale. Returns on cans and bottles will be about the same as anywhere else in Terrace, and Sharyk has plans of considering paper recycling as a: possibility. “It may be a year or so before I make a decision on working with paper,” Sharyk said, “I would have to make some ar- rangements and it’s all a matter of money.’’ Sharyk then continued by explaining about the considerably low return from paper recycling, even in the lower mainland where the population far exceeds ours, The building is family- run, and Sharyk has no immediate plans for tak- ing on employees. - a Wayne Braid I feel that recycling is a good idea and if Terrace had a trash sorting system, I don’t think | would mind separating trash into different categories. But, before this would happen | would like to see just how much it is going to cost us. Jackie Rose Yes, | don’t think that sorting the trash would be so bad, it has to be done at the dump anyway. | think that a lot of people sort of separate their trash already; | know that | have done some paper sorting for my inlaws in the past. - Climate Terrace has a West Coast marine climate. The easy accessibility for marine weather in- fluences create mild temperatures. Usually only December, January and February average below freezing. General- ly Terrace is frost-free for about 151 days of the year. The latest Terrace frost was recorded on June 11, 1938 and the earliest on Sept. 15, 1916. Terrace Review — Wednesday, September 24, 1986 § To the editor A recent statement by Skeena Social Credit candidate Edna Cooper that, ‘Having an MLA in the opposition (Frank Howard) is like having a road block in the way of our progress,’’ appears to be nothing short of grasping at straws to direct people’s attention away from the real issues in Skeena. It seems to me that governments and their © policies and priorities and outside factors will determine to a_ large degree our provincial, and indeed our national well being, Entrepre- neurs will commit deve- lopment and research money when times are such that a profit can be made. Tax rules, mar- kets, government incen- tives, transportation and How soon we forget energy play key roles in development. Deve- lopment in Skeena is not immune to these factors. So let’s check the record. Except for three years, this province has had a Social Credit govern- ment for three decades, including the immediate past 10 years, with a ma- jority in the legislature. Exactly four years ago the Social Credit Cabinet Committee on Economic Development blitzed the area and unveiled an economic development strategy for northwest B.C. entitled New Fron- tiers. Priorities for this area were tourism, ma- nufacturing and trans- contigned on page 23 Beye r continued from page 4 It's a tactic that has worked well for the Socreds. When the NDP abandoned some of its more social- istic goals, the Socreds very successfully used the old saw of the leopard that is unable to change its spots. Dave Barrett was still wearing his same old red underwear, they said. _ But in the case of Vander Zalm I don’t think it will work. The public seems to be very comfortable in its belief that the man isn’t another Bill Bennett. All of which is very bad for the NDP. Not only will they have little chance of winning the election, but they may be routed by the smiling man who once quit politics in disgust and then came back to claim the job of premier.
