Music students form small local orchestra TERRACE — Yamaha Music School recently marked the beginning of the summier break with a series of year-end con- certs held at the school facility. by Joan Spencer Terrace Contributor The concerts featured both solo and ensemble performances, with some of the more advanced students forming a small orchestra; a ‘‘first’’ for the school. Many original compositions were played by the young composers, some as young as five years of age. a Begun five years ago, the school has grown to an enrolment of almost 200 students, with six teachers. Courses cover preschool keyboard, piano, guitar and band instruments. In the fall, theory classes will be added to the curriculum. What has made the school such a success? “The dedication of our teachers,”’ states Joan Spencer, school ad- ministrator. ‘‘We have been careful to choose not only qualified musi- cians, but teachers who care about the enjoy- ment of music and the logical presentation of the lesson material.’’ Classes begin again on Sept. 8. Parents wishing to register their children should do so early, as space will be limited. More information about the Yamaha Music School courses is available at Sight and: Sound in the Skeena Mall. We surpassed our goal of $8,000 and raised nearly $9,900 toward cancer research, educa- tion and service to pa- tients. A special thanks to the volunteer canvassers and area captains. Without their interest and con- tinuing support, we could not have attained our goal. Sincerely, Linda Karu Terrace, B.C.
