It should be understood that the editor does nat necessarily endorse statements made hereunder. Sir: I have been reading an article today in a Southern paper in which it is claimed that “log: ged off”’ land.is being cleared of stumps in the bush districts of Louisiana for from ten to fifteen dollars per acre by the simple process of boring a hole into the stump diagonally, beginning about two feet above the ground and ending two feet below. The earth is then removed from the lower end of the hole and a fire started. The hole acts asa chim- ney, and the stumps are quickly consumed. The hole is made with a long auger of fair size. Men who are engaged in clearing land ‘in the south have boring work. This might be a good tip for people in your part of the country who find clearing opera- tions not only laborious but ex- pensive, with powder at present prices, This plan should work well in. any timber during dry weather, and is probably safer than present methods cf burning. I would like some of our Terrace friends to try this out.
