ey LOGGER SPORTS THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER NANAIMO JOINS (CANLOG) GROUP Nanaimo, the newest member of the Canadian Log- ger Sports’ Association (CANLOG), officially kicks off that organization’s fifth season on Sunday, May 20. CANLOG is a non-profit association organized in 1968 as a subsidiary organization to the Festival of Forestry. Both groups are under the chair- manship of Bill Moore of Winter Harbor. “In 1968 we realized that loggers’ sports was going to grow and we felt safety stan- dards and continuity should be brought into the program,” Mr. Moore said. “‘With the co- operation of established events in places like Sooke and Squamish we formed CANLOG to sanction areas only when certain standards were met. “Two years ago the Provincial Government recog- nized our status, naming loggers sports as the official Industry Sport of B.C. “And last year we were delighted when Ontario and Quebec came into our organization and by 1974 we hope to stage a truly Canadian Championship in loggers’ sports,” Mr. Moore said. CANLOG today consists of 11 B.C. centres who conduct logger sport competitions. By being a member of CANLOG, each centre is eligible to hold at least one -.sanctioned Canadian championship event. Highlight of the CANLOG season is the Festival of The Manitoba government wants people to know the price spread between what the farmer gets and what the consumer pays for food at the supermarket. According to Dr. J.M. Cormack, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, a great deal of concern is being expressed about recent food price in- creases. The information being released should show the consumer what happens between the farmer and the supermarket shelf. Surveys are being made of prices at Dominion, Loblaw and Safeway Stores. Producer prices are obtained from marketing boards and public stockyards. The first list made available to the press showed 33 items, including chicken drumsticks for which the farmer received 35 cents a pound compared with the retail price of 96 cents; 36 cents a pound live weight for cattle ( choice steers dress out at 57 percent of live weight) while beef retailed at 84 cents to $1.49; 18 cents for a quart of milk to the farmer, selling for 34 cents retail to the consumer, and so on. The department proposes to go one step further by providing a breakdown of production and processing costs plus the product price paid by the supermarkets.
