McCarthyism rears its head in Victoria McCarthyism reared its ugly head in Victoria again last week when the past president of the Oak Bay Conservative Association, Clarence Goode, demanded punishment of a teacher who invited local Communist leader Ernie Knott to address a Grade 10 class at Oak Bay Senior High School. The Victoria press gave widespread publicity to the action of Goode in sending a letter to the high ’ school vice principal, and copies to B.C. Education Minister Donald Brothers and Prime Minister Trudeau. Victoria school board chairman Peter Bunn said that Knott’s lecture to students represented the board’s broad policy of bringing in knowledgable persons to talk with students. He said three other political parties had representatives address students in the school in the past weeks and ‘‘the Communist Party is legal in Canada.” He added: “IT have confidence in the school staft to make professional decisions.”’ In a letter to the editor of the Victoria Daily Times Knott said: “Let me say in reply through your columns that if he (C. Goode) sincerely holds these views and ‘stands for democratic rights, I fail to understand why he did not raise his a DRY CLEANING 8 Ibs. $2. | .25¢ each additional lb. They are capable of forming good sound political opinions of their own in a mature way and are doing so on a world scale at present. . .” Knott said: ‘‘By calling me a ‘back door type’ he seeks to say that I and the Communist Party are somehow subversive and anti-Canadian. Let me publicly tell Mr. Goode that while my military service record may not be as long and illustrious as his, I am prepared at any time to stack my record of service to Canada, both in war and in peace time against his.” The Victoria Communist leader offered to publicly debate the record of service and the program of the Communist Party of Canada with that of the Progressive Conservative or any other party. Peace Council last week addressed the following .“Open Letter’’ to all B.C. federal candidates: * * * Dear Candidate: You are soliciting the votes of the people of British Columbia in order that you may become a Member of Parliament. Our next Government, whatever its composition, will be faced on June 26th with many grave responsibilities — the most important of which we believe to be the shaping of the foreign policy of Canada — the | fundamental questions of peace or war. The Canadian people have the responsibility to elect those whom they believe will lead this country along the path of peaceful coexistence with all other nations. This is a matter of life or death for this generation and generations to come. We are therefore asking all candidates to declare their position on the following: (1) Canada must tetally disassociate herself from the United States war against Vietnam, and thereby strengthen those forces within the U.S. who are seeking an early end to the war. (2) To remove the roadblocks now standing in the way of positive developments in the Paris peace talks, Canada should demand immediate cessation of all bombing and other acts of war against North Vietnam. (3) Canada should declare its intention to withdraw from Norad and Nato which serve no defensive purpose and cost the Canadian taxpayer millions of dollars every year. Special PT offer for new readers By ERNIE CRIST, Circulation Manager When the Liberal strategists called for a Federal election to be held on June 25th, they weren't exactly being co-operative with the Pacific Tribune, considering that we were in the middle of a campaign trying to raise $17,000. On the other hand, we have become rather impatient with the new leaders of the ‘‘old line’’ parties and could hardly wait for an opportunity to take them to task; to talk about things other than sex appeal (the liberal.secret weapon) and how easy it is to talk tough when it doesn’t count, as was the case when de Gaulle cried ‘‘Quebec libre’’, but be as quiet as a mouse about American interference in our affairs, when to speak up would be the patriotic thing to do. Ina ‘‘democracy” like ours we can hardly expect that people like us, who talk about the real issues, will get free radio and television time as do the ‘‘old line’’ parties, and so we must rely on our own and sometimes old shoeleather to bring our message to the Canadian people, that there is nothing new in the Liberal or Tory pot except old and rehashed leftovers and that the people of Canada would do well to toss out Tories and Liberals and make a fresh start if they want to catch up with progress and being listened to in the councils of nations. The most effective way to get our message to the people and one that will have a lasting effect, is to distribute our press as widely as possible during the election campaign; to give sample copies to as many people as possible and follow this up by selling a subscription. No matter how often I think about the best means of getting even with Liberals and Tories for their shameful betrayal of Canada, I always come up with the same answer — distribute the PT everywhere you go and sell as many new subs as possible. Every new sub sold is one more nail in the coffin of the ‘‘old line’’ parties. To help win many new readers we are presenting the special offer below. If you are not a subscriber, become one today. Use the offer to introduce the paper to friends and workmates.
