THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM REPORT TO: Mayor and Council FROM: Public Works Committee Report from the Public Works Committee Meeting held August 23rd, 1978 IN ATTENDANCE: Alderman Mabbett ; Alderman Traboulay F, E. Peters, P. Eng. ITEM I RE: Improvements to Lougheed Highway through Port Coquitlam The City Engineer had written to the Ministry of Highways regarding three items of interest to the City. The following replies will be of interest to Council: . ; a.) The Ministry of Highways has agreed to install advance street ‘name signs at the major intersections along the Lougheed Highway in order to provide drivers with this information prior to them reaching the intersection. The Ministry will be reviewing the present speed limit on the Lougheed Highway as soon as all construction is complete and will recommend that it be changed from 50 KM per hour to 60 KM per hour. , We had requested that the Ministry install a fence in the median of the highway approximately across from Jervis Street in order to prevent pedestrians from crossing the highway at this point. It was felt that visibility of pedestrians emerging from the planting on the median would be poor and that crossings would be hazardous. The Ministry has replied that they do not intend to install fencing in the median and have no knowledge of any previous commitments which might have been made on this subject. The above items are for your information and do not require any action. ITEM II | RE: Foot-bridge at Jervis Street The Public Works Committee recommends that a City owned foot-bridge across the creek at Jervis Street should be taken out.at this time in order to discourage pedestrians crossing the highway at this location. The foot-bridge was useful while the highway wasa two-lane highway but the present width and speed of traffic makes crossing more hazardous. Pedestrians shouldbe encouraged to cross the highway at the traffic signals at Hastings Street. continued on Page 2
