A8 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 8, 2006 RCMP digging deep into violent crime | THE RCMP detachment’s hew commander says the violent crime rate here is - higher than it should be. So Inspector Dave Fen- ‘son is having the violent crime offences broken down by category in preparation for a meeting with commu- ‘nity’ groups here later. this month. The - crime. information _and the meeting are part of the force’s planning to deter- mine. where it should focus its efforts, he said last week. « “Is it domestic crime? Is it street violence? Is it drug violence? That’s what we’re going to find out,” Fenson « said, “What we want to do is hear from a broad spectrum of the. community to help identify our. priorities,” he added of the upcoming SeS- sion. Fenson said it is impor- tant to understand that while . police officers have a high ° profile role in dealing with ' crime, tackling the’ root‘ causes is a broader i issue. “y think Collectively, it's Dave Fenson ; a community response. It’s about getting the best bang for the buck,” he said. - Fenson said crime pre- vention is about education and the. circumstances in which crime takes place as it is about enforcement. ~ “Where does crime come from? What are the factors?” he continued. __As it is, crime stats hére’ show the number of violent crimes’ within city limits - rose from 3 15 in 2002 to 427 in 2003 to 450 in 2004. Assaults themselves jumped from 291 in 2002 to 372 in 2003 to 408 in 2004. In previous years, the de- tachment here has focussed _ on Narcotics with good re-_ sults. when police do concentrate » On One area of criminal ac-— tivity, it can skew statistics. That’s because the simple fact of beefing up police re- sources in any one area will result in more arrests. * “It may seem like there might be more crime but it’s a result of being more proac- tive," Fenson said. Fenson has already met with social services groups, - and others to talk about an-- other issue ~ public drinking, « - particularly in the downtown - area. There’s been a growing : ‘feeling within the city that the number of individuals © drinking in public is increas- ing. “It was. really ‘about. developing a community re- . sponse to it,” he said of the session. 2 ATV stolen and tires get slashed - ANOTHER four-wheeled off-road vehicle has been taken from a local residence.
