AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 6, 2003 Keep up the good “work” Dear Sir: Just a few words of encouragement from up country to the union brothers in Kitimat who have been forced by a heartless company to stand around in the rain and the hot sun carry- ing heavy signs because the company doesn't agree wilh their demands. Our hearts go out to you. We have heard about the medieval working conditions in the mill and that a lot of the workers are making less than eighty thousand a year, We know how hard it is to make ends meet on that kind of chicken scratch with the cost of living going up. We all agree you need a big fat raise. There are of course some upstream effects of your struggle. Upwards of a thousand truck- ers, loggers, saw millers, suppliers, etc, etc, are now unemployed but [’m sure you have their full support also and that goes for their wives and children, too. We went through the same thing in 1996, when the Prince Rupert pulp mill workers went through a four month struggle similar to yours. They were successful in getting an additional 13 cents per hour for their efforts. CORRESPONDENCE FOR MacKay’s Funeral Service Ltd. Most loggers missed an entire summer sea- son and many went broke. Thousands of saw millers, chip plants, truckers, railroaders and may other also patiently sat our that strike. But you want to know something funny? That strike was the beginning of the end for that mill as well as for thousands of other northerners whose livelihood depended on (hat pulp mill. Ironically those same workers, who haven't worked for over two years have now decided they could do nicely with 20 per cent less pay and that they could run the mill with a lot less people, They have even voted to put their city in Terrace, B.C.
