Boy, was 1) comes seems wrong! This article is a tribuie ta al} gardeners in Terrace — those Whose gardens we lonked at and those whose garden without any public attention. First a bit of history. The Terrace Beautification Society has heen working to beautify Terrace fer many yeas now. Driving furces include Yvonne Moen, Hetty Campbell, Conrad Gunzenberg and George Clark ~— just to name a few. ‘The society is involved in a multitude of projects, fom the annual Garbation to the Arcua Hill improvement, to planting the plauters acem around town. This is le bth year of the Mos! Beautiful Garden Contest. Now — back to our garden ad- venture. I wanted criteria to be illumi- rating, yet simple. [ settled on loosely defined ideas. of maintenance, colour, accessories and overall effect. These were used to judge the single family and uailer garden categorics. Tasked Mary Stewart (an avid focal gardener) and David Hull (an avid admirer) ta help me judge. We met on Saturday morning, at a local coffee shop to discuss surategy -~ Uicn we were on our way. For six hours we Uavelled from. the harseshoe through downtown, ‘up tothe bench, out to Braun’s Is jand and over te Thornhill. As we viewed cach garden, it became increasingly obvious that ‘our choice was going lo be very difficult, Every garden was beautiful and unique in its own way. £ would Tike to take this opportunity ta mention sume of the highlights — please forgive me if | averiook someone — we viewed more than 15 gardens. The wianers of aur single fam- ily category arc Murityn und Stew Christensen, Their gar- dents, in front and back, are truly beautiful — inunaculately kep, bute who YVONNE MOEN tastefully designed, with stunning and unique colour combinations, Honourable mention goes to Lita and Tom Fiyam who have created a beautiful and penceful Slumgi-La — compleie.— with teahouse, waterfall and bonsai fruit Gees. The fact that there have been fur weddings beld there speaks for itself Mrs. Nel de Jong alsa reecived henourable mention for an immaculate yard, beautiful ac- cessorics amd a collection of geraniums to rival any nursery. As out senior enuy, her bard work and dedication are obvious. As for trailer gardens — and the best use or limited space — our winners are Judy and Howard Chafin, Judy’s imagination has made her yard a whimsical jour- hey — from the seashore to the desert. Here various garage sale teasurcs have found new life. Howard's roses add elegance to the effect. Honourable mention goes to Jima Hall, for bis roses and fish pond amid a beautiful and peace- ful garden, Honoulabie mention also to Sue Ferretti for her cxeellent use of plans and ornaments. These ate the ‘winaers'* but as I mentioned before every garden could have won based on its uniqueness, Karen Reid does double duty — ber yard is besutifully & landscaped and home to a beauti- ful collection of snapdragons.
