Hospital ponders fate
of new recording system

AT A FIFTH the cost of its com-
petitors, the central dictation sys-
tem sold to Mills Memorial Hos-
pital sounded too good to be true.

A year and a half after the deal
was done, however, GSC Data
Corp. has provided no working
system, and hospital officials are
deciding whether to go with a dif-
ferent company.

Doctors are still using the old
system of dictating information

about patients into hand-held tape”

recorders, The tapes are later
transcribed and recorded.

The new. system. would be a
centralized computerized system
that officials expect would be
much faster and more manage-
able. vo

Similar systems used by other
hospitals cost more than $70,000,

according to hospital administra-
tor Michael Leisinger.

Leisinger said the hospital pur-
chased a central computer system
from GSC and decided to be a tri-
al hospital for development of the
company’s digital dictation sys-
tem. .

The hospital would get the sys-
tem at a fraction of the cost of
other. companies — with a

_ satisfaction-or-money-back guar-

anice — ‘and it would be com-
patible with the computer system.

Only so far, there hasn’t been
satisfaction,
