THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 1971 Outdoor — | Living . BY JOYCE CHAMPION: : The first warm "touches of summer are here and we can . look forward to the pleasant ’ days and evenings: we will be spending in the garden or patio. What about the barbecue and. furniture we stored away les fall? Does it need any attention ° , before we can use it? Here are a, few tips that will make your outdoor furniture | and = «equipment look like new. Let's take a look at the barbecue. Removing grease = . from the grill is a really messy h §6job, but to make things easier |- . rub with a compound ~- such as -Boraxo hand: soap ~ in the - hottest water availableThis cuts -grease and helps get the grill .clean without too much hard scrubbing, If the grill is very rusty, it’s hest to use a commercial rust remover before washing. To freshen painted patio furniture, was it with a solution using one teaspoon of ammonia, two ounces of borax and two quarts of water-no soap is necessary. Apply the solution with a soft clath or sponge; ‘it requires no rinsing, You may also use this solution towash the painted enamel portion of the barbecue and hood. Canvas and plastic’ covered chairs and loungettes can also 7 ‘be washed. First, check the canvas for stains and spots and pre-treat . them by welting the area: with cold water and rubbine the spot with an addive like Borateem, Then wash the canvas with warm water and detergent or ‘SOBp. Plastic furniture can be =m . scrubbed with soapy water and (one acupof borax. This will remove the dust and bring out the bright colors in the ptastic. This method can also be used for plastic umbrellas, hammocks and many other items of patio and garden furntiure. To remove that musty storage smell from ratan furniture and unpainted picnic tables and ‘chairs, scrub them with Borateem and hot water. And the same technique can be used ot clean other wicker work, such as flower baskets, If you have any problems on washing please write to me at the Washday Advice Bureau, 96: Bloor W., Toronto, Ont. ‘Graduates with honors Orval F, Harden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orval Harden of Terrace, will graduate from Eastern Washington State College with a Bachelor of Aris degree Friday, June 11.
