a AUUC appeals for cooperation of all Ukrainian groups in B.C Provincial committee of the Association of United Ukrain- ian Canadians this week is- Sued an appeal to all Ukrain- » lang in British Columbia ‘“‘to Seek with us the paths of co- Operation for the common 800d of our people and our Country.” The AUUC statement hailed the achievements of the Uk- Tainian people in B.C. on the ©Ceasion of two important an- niversaries this year: the cen- tenary of our province and the 40th year of the AUUC. “Ukrainian participation in the .centennial demonstrated more than anything else in recent years the growing and widespread desire of the Ukrainian people for unity on all questions of mutual inter- est and concern to the com- munity,” the statement con- tinued. “It showed that there are more things in life that unite us than divide us, such as history, traditions, _ culture, kinsmen, love of our coun- try — and our common in- terest in peace, security and progress that we ‘share with all other Canadians.” The appeal closed with the words: “Let us learn to work together in the spirit of brotherhood and peace.” Gert Whyte's SPORTLIGHT CANADIAN hockey team, the Kelowna Packers, has just concluded a series of five exhibition games in the Soviet, Union (won two,. tied two, lost one). Their record on the ice was very satisfac- tory. Even more important was their conduct off the ice. From all reports, they won many friends (unlike the Penticton Vees) and paved the way for further two-way THANKS, . The Pacific Tribune extends its heartiest thanks to its loyal supporters who turned in 1,119 subs dur- ing the fall circulation drive, to put us well over the top in our campaign for 1,000 subs and renewals. - To subscribers who have not yet received book premiums, we offer our apologies. Half-way through the campaign we ran out of books and had to put in a second order. As soon as the shipment arrives ‘| * the books will be mailed out. So please be patient. Record of the press clubs is shown below, together with the sub targets for the whole year. It will be be seen that while half the clubs topped their drive tragets, only a minority of clubs have fulfilled their 1958 quotas. There is still time, during December, for most of the press clubs to surpass their objectives. FOR 1,119 SUBS THE SCOREBOARD EVERYONE As an added inducement to keep the subs rolling in, we are offering, free of charge, a copy of the special 48-page illustrated magazine, Northern Neigh- bors, to each subscriber (mew or renewal) and sub salesman during the month of December. This special edition of Northern Neighbors is one you will want to have and keep. So let’s prevent December from being a “doldrum” month. There are still many October and November expirees to be picked up, and the December list will be mailed out next week. If each press club would organize one “Renewal Night” a week for the next few weeks we could reduce our unwelcome backlog of expirees considerably. Will YOU do YOUR part? . tours of Canadian and Soviet teams. ° In the middle of prepara- tions for the Grey Cup, then, let us take a moment off to congratulate the Packers on their all-round success as un- official ambassadors of good- will. We agree with Rafer John- son, who was the star of the U.S. track team which met the Russians in Moscow last summer, thiat “sports is a medium for improving inter- national relations.” Percy Wells Cerutty, the little man who coached Aus- tralian Herb Ellicott to new world records in the mile run, agrees with Johnson and sees athletics as “not a thing in itself’ but as “a means to certain ends,” one of which s “that youth may live.” Some notable Cerutty quotes, as published in the People’s World of San Francisco: “T advocate a return to the ideals of the Greek era: fit minds in fit bodies; fitness, Le., ability to live fully physic- ally and naturally and all else contributing to that end, rather than business and com- mercialism being an end in itself. “What profit it a man if he makes a million but has ulcers; cannot climb or enjoy a mountain; no longer swims; has little but hate or envy in TER VANCOUVER Drive 1958 : : GREA D 1958 Club Quota Achieved Quota Achieved his heart? rive, : “ ° Nanaimo oF. ee se8-— 795 82* 225 216 I see a world: freed not Club Cee Achieved re ee eevee Parksville’ ooh ss Nee 10 5 35 16 ’ necessarily from competition Advance" ..2.-.----- 20 oe Rar ho ask Victorians css 40 52" 150 129 or man striving against man, Broadway. -.=...--.- 30 al ; ie but -of crazy® destructiveness eat ae “ s 17 PROVINCE and death from which there East End ---------- 10 3 “ Widersrove: 2. 2c0 5 yh 15 1 is no return.
