_ BIG BUSINESS a in By MARK FRANK , —OTTAWA. OUIS St. Laurent, minis- | ter of external affairs and the white-haired boy of the Liberal Party now being groomed for the Number 1 position on the front-line government benches, makes interesting reading as a former member of the big money frat- arnity. Slated to take over from Prime Minister Mackenzie King after the next national convention of the party, St. Laurent’s back- ground as a one-time corporation tawyer and a director of 11 im- portant companies is in startling contrast to King’s own lack of such direct connections. In answers filed recently to questions about cabinet members and their corporation connect- tions, Prime Minister King’s secretary, Norman Robertson, wags particularly careful about underlining the fact that King was not and never had been a director of a corporation. : When King steps down, it will be the end of an era indeed, as some writers have noted. For ito his boots—barring an up- yt— will step St. Laurent with a long string of formerly-held directorships gilding his record. St. Laurent, of course, had the good sense and “decency” to resign his directorships on De- cember 15, 1941, when he “sever- ed” his tie-up with: Les Prevoyants du Canada; Administration and Trust Com- pany; Quebec Apartments Ltd.; Gatineau Power Company; Rocky City Tobacco Company Ltd; Bank of Montreal; Met- ropolitan Life Insurance Com- pany; Ltd.; Individual Acceptance Corporation; PF. erault Limitee; and Stand- ard Investments Ltd. Some of St. Laurent’s fellow members of the government still bolding down directorships are: Minister of National Revenue James J. McCann, with Capital Trust, which merged with Guar- antee Trust in May, 1947, and ‘angi SALLY BOWES Let Me Solve Your INCOME TAX PROBLEMS Room 20 — 9 East Hastings MAr. 9965 Sa an pre rR STYLES VALUES QUALITY Always at the Home of — UNION MADE Clothing — and Friendly Service. As we understand it the principal issue in this action was whether or act these members of the I.T.U. had conspired to injure the Southam Company Limited. The ques- tion, therefore, was decided in our favor. The decision, however, has gone against us on another point, and unless and until the decision on. that point is reversed, we will, of course, abide by the ruling of the Court. Our attitude towards the struggle between us and the Southam Company Limited, apart from the law suit, of course, remains the same as it has always been. We still feel that . the Southam Company Limited cannot in all fair- ness expect us to conclude a contract with them and work for them in Vancouver while they refuse to employ members of the I.T.U. in other cities.
