FARMERS! Fight For Your Future In an attractively designed pamphlet Farmers! Fight for your Future (35 cents) the Commu- nist Party of Canada presents its answer to monopoly’s and agri- business’ policy of forcing Can- ada’s farmers off the land. Writ- ten by William Beeching, this pamphlet outlines an analysis of the present farm crisis and an action program to meet. the danger. Confronting the farmer today is the policy of the Trudeau ad- ministration — to expand and deepen monopoly control over agriculture at the farmer’s ex- pense. These proposals, set forth in a 475-page book called Agriculture in the Seventies, will drive a million people off the land, create ghost towns, eliminate jobs for Canadian agricultural workers, and allow wider penetration of the Cana- dian home market by U.S. agri- culture and monopoly. Canadian farmers can do something about it. One of the steps to a viable farm policy is found in a_ section entitled ‘Where the Markets Are’: “A hungry world will readily ab- sorb our surpluses if we break down the present artificial and monopoly-created barriers. Po- tential markets outside of Can- ada are so large as to dwarf the Canadian home market. Experts estimate that most of the expan- sion of possible markets will take place outside of Canada... “The potential trade with so- cialist countries is enormous... It is this possibility of expanded trade relations with socialist countries that holds the bright promise for future prosperity for Canada.” To win this and other new goals for agriculture demands unity; not only unity among the farmers themselves, but unity between the workers and farm- ers against monopoly which ex- ploits them both. “Workers buy food and fibre from the farmers. The better off the workers, the more they buy. Farmers buy goods that the workers manu- facture, which means more jobs in the cities. Therefore it is in the mutual interests of both workers and farmers to support each other’s demands for mar- kets, wages, prices and agricul- tural diversification.” The final section of the pam- phlet points out the need for independent, mass and political action of the farmers in a coali- tion of workers, farmers, intel- lectuals and other people which can win new gains for Canada’s working people. A concise and clear program proposed by the Communist Party follows. Among the major points are: @ an aggressive campaign by all levels of government to wid- en export markets for Canadian agriculture; @ emergency measures to keep Canadian farmers on the land during this crisis through the provision of cash, and the dec- laration of a moratorium on debt combined with tax relief mea- sures; e nationalize the farm machin- ery, fertilizer, and feed mono- polies. This pamphlet, Farmers! Fight for your Future is a valuable ad- dition to the advancement of the perspective for a realistic agri- cultural policy for Canada, and a must for every farmer. Farmers! Fight for your Fut- ure is published on behalf of the Communist Party of Canada by Progress Books and is available at all Communist Party offices and from. progressive book stores. (M.S.) PACIFIC.
