Feast ladens tables USERS of a local soup kitchen were treated to sumptuous Christmas feast Saturday. The Dec. 15 dinner at the health unit auditorium was Organized by the Bread of Life soup kit- chen, which is run by members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Organizers were ex- _pecting a couple hundred “guests for the event, On the menu was the tradi- tional turkey, potatoes, ve- getables and salad. But soup kitchen coor- dinator Ron Dame said there was also salmon. He said the federal Depart- ment of Fisheries and ‘Oceans provided the fish “from seizures they made this year.- - The event was followed ‘the next day by a child- ren’s Christmas party. -. About 70 children from needy families attend each year and enjoy games, “snacks and opening pre- sents, : The Bread of Life soup Kitchen began a few years ago and developed into a regular Saturday event. Now in its sixth year, it runs from 3 to 5 p.m. Sa- turdays at the health unit auditorium. The meal includes Soup, buns, a beverage and dessert. Eight women at the church prepare the soup each week. Other volunteers pick up day-old bread from Safeway and freeze it. That bread is then dis- tributed to the needy. “We bring it down every Saturday and people get to take home bread,” he said.
