B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May | 2, 1999 Local dies of cancer “HERE ‘N THERE YVONNE MOEN . A. man who loved life, fam- ily and gardening, Edward Percy Sproule passed away April 4 at Mills Memorial Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was bom on 1 Septem: ber 11, 1910 to Edward and Josephine Sproule — in Lamerton, Alberta, “Eddie”? was the second oldest of his seven brothers and sisters. As a youngster he worked hard on the farm, went to school and played sports. Eddie apparently was an exceptional hockey player and played with bis brother Gordon on a local hockey team. The group toured lo- cally and were a joy to watch. Eddie grew up during the “Hungry Thirties.’? This is a depressing part of our Ca- nadian History, bul if you talked with him he would smile and remember all the good times. He recalied hunting jack rabbits and dig- ging up wild onions and garlic with his brothers and sisters to give io their mother. These things may seem simple, but he remem- bered them as the fondest meals that he ever had. Eddie went to school until he was 15 and then went out to work. He found jobs on farms. and worked for the railroad. Jt was in the late thirlies he met a lovely woitan, Susie, who stole bis heart. The two were married on the most romantic day of the year in the early forties. After their marriage they’ moved to Calgary ta make their home and Ed found a job al an ammonia plant. However, farm life bec- Koned and the couple, along with their young family, moved to Richmond where Ed worked on a dairy farm. In 1952, he started an tock construction work, The next four years saw lots of changes ‘and Ed worked hard at various jobs includ- ing the pipcline out of Hope and the sawmill out of . Prince George. Oddly enough, his first job drilling and blasting was be- tween Terrace and Kitimat, at the time when the railway was being built. During this time the fam- ily moved with Ed and saw lots of the province. Some particular spots of interest were Howe Sound and Lyt- ton, {t was during his time in Lytton- sealing Jack Ass Mountain- that he met one of his best friends, Abe Krahn. Abe was a life-long friend and spent many days visil- ing Ed at the time of his sickness. In 1961, Ed came to Ter- race to work on the road to Kilimat when the ‘slide’ oc- curred at Lakelse Lake. In 1963, the family finally settled in Terrace and it was here that he started with a local drilling company. In 1972 Ed bought a drill from his boss and formed bis own company with Len Krimbill, Sproule and Krimbill did drilling and blasting for lo- cal forest companies. Un- fortunately, four years later Ed was involved in a ter- ‘rible accident. After a leng- thy recovery he retired at the age of 68 and sold the business to his son-in-law Jack. Ed still conlinucd to work sporadically for the company cven after he sold it One job that he never quit, was working in his garden growing vegetables for fam- ily and friends. It made him happy to be able to share his harvest with the ones he loved and those who were less fortunale.' Once a month he would take a potatoe sack full of mixed timist, vegetables to the Sally Ann shop for the less fortunate ones. He always cared for other people and believed in them. Ed and his wiie Susie adored flowers and that was evident. at: their -house ‘on Kerr St. The flower beds were kept immaculate and they often had cut flowers in the house. Ed’s generosity was over- whelming. “He raised his own children and then when they were scttled in Terrace hey took in many foster children, Some stayed only a matter of days and others stayed years.: Ed’s family feel they have been blessed. by the gilt of his love, the many life les- sons he has given them and the kindness he shared with others. Ed was ever the op- believing that all people were good. ; Edward Percy Sproule will be sadly’ missed by these -he. leaves behind to mourn him. The funeral service for Edward Percy Sproule was held at the Knox United Church on Friday April 9 at 1:00 pm. Officiating at the service was Reverend Michael Hare and interment Edward Sproule is at the Terrace Municipal Cemetery. Ed is. survived by his daughter Carol, son Dale, Step-son Arvid, .son-in-law Joe, brothers Glean and George, sisters Louise, Lena, Jean and Josephine, sister-in-law Isabelle and many grandchildren, May Ed now rest in peace. . @MedicAlert™ SPEAKS FOR you - Do It For A Friend Please welcame your neighbourhocd sanvassers when they kaoek on your door. - Only 35% of worthy cancer projects can be funded.
