AG - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 10, 1999 . Please don’t mess with El An open letter to: REE Mike Scott, MP; CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag going on welfare. However, if the $20 billion was paid out by increasing eligibility, it would reduce the burden placed on provincial and municipal taxes. Those people on EI Dear Sir; On behalf of those less fortunate constituents in our com- munity I write to impress upon you the need to keep the EI premiums as they are and to increase the eligibility of ihe claimants. Across Canada today only 31 per cent of women and 38 per cent of men find theniselves cligible for EI benefits be~ cause of the restrictions imposed by our current govern- ment, This is the same government that promised jobs, jobs, jobs. Here in B.C. workers’ premiums . are pagl of their pay package and any reduction amount&@o pay dis. To reduce employers’ people. We need you to please speak up on this issues you are our voice and we need. you to fight to maintain premiums. EI is a benefit to all business and workers. This govern- incut plans on taking future premiums for non- Emptoyment Insurance uses and caucel-its $20 billion liability it has already spent to pay down the deficit. Removing EI from. the. community results in people premiums becomes an insult to working | spend their money in local’ businesses. This creates jobs and benefits the whole communily, unlike welfare, which increases taxes and is of less benefit to local business. Mr. Scoit, as you are aware (1 hope) the Canadian Labour Congress and the Quebec Federation of Labour back a proposal for an independent fund and an Unem- ployment Insurance Commission. On Oct, 6, 1998 all four Opposition parties endorsed the proposal. at a press confer- elice, This would be a simple and effective mechanism for secing that contributions made by workers and employers to the EI program are used for their intended purpase. Gerry King, Skeena Anti-Poverty, Terrace, B.C. Change the snow plow rules Dear Sir: Woke up this morning; it had snowed ail night. Went out at 7 a.m. and shovelled out the driveway so we could take my daughter lo school. Took:a half an hour as the grader had left a foot high, 4 foot wide snow roll when plowing the road. We get in the car and go to the school only to find that once again there is a snow roll aud the school has not been plowed, We come honte aid phone the school board to find out why the school yards have not been plowed, Once again it comes down to city bylaws. The school board is not al- lowed to plow the school yards anytime between 11 p.m. and 6 am. due to a city bylaw. Apparently some people have complained of the noise so this bylaw was imposed, Pray tell then when is the school board supposed to plow these schools. Their safety rules state they cannot do it while there are children in the school yards. Which is a Chippers and FOR SEVERAL years now the City of Terrace has - maintained a talk back tine, a phone number connected to an answering machine aliowing people to call in and register their opinions on any number of municipal is. sues. For future reference, the phone neumaber is 638= 4778. Betow is a transeript of two recent callers. The noisy chipper “You know it’s pretty bloody obvious to me that none of you people down there have to live anywhere near that log chipper. People can beg and complain and plead. and come to you - on their hands and knees to try and do something about that thing. If 1 was having a noisy party in my backyard you'd be down on me with both feet, and Yd be: paying fines: until the cows come home. at good decision as none of us would like to sec children run over by a snowplow, I am getting very tired of a few minority groups deciding what is in the best interest of the rest of us. Cars sliding and spinning and getting stuck while taking their children to school is not in the best interest or safety of anyoue of us, especially our children. I feel that it is about time we stand up and tell our fine fair city and our bylaw enforcement office that we think they are full of it. Maybe those of us that are so quick to complain about noise from a snow plow should either move out to the country or try living by an airport or a freeway. That way there would be a valid reason for com- plaining. Maybe it is time for the rest of us to band together and oust our city council and bylaw officer and find some new ones. Kathy Burnett, Terrace, B.C, jaywalking But some two-bit bloody outfit, which bas already left half the people in this town belly-up because they don’t pay their damn taxes or their contractors, can get a ma- chine, and they can run the damn thing all day and all night; min the piece and quiet of the whole town; lower property values; ruin peoples’ sleep, and you let them get away with it. Well I tell you one thing, the town council may not have the guts to do anything about it right now, but by God the people of this town are going to have something to say about it come next election.”’ sors daywalking:. ‘4 think it should be revisited, It will end up costing more. You may end up hiring another person, so-on-and-so-forth, and that will be more expensive to the city, and this isn’t a police state — this is Canada, and it’s also not downtown - Vancouver. This is sick — ridiculous.’’ Winter Clearance Sale We're Making Room For Spring Stock & Winter Blankets . % . | 2 5 off All Winter Boots, Clothing & Accessories 2 ote Other Hours: Watch for q In-store 12-6 Tues - Fri weeny jals duri 7 Specials!
