Education minister Art Char- bonneau made the announcement May 30 at the proposed daycare site between Caledonia and the REM Lee Theatre. “This. child. care. centre - will: help young parents continue their education so they can support their families and break the cycle of poverly,”’ said Charbonneau. The daycare cost js part of the provincial government’s B.C. 21 program. Over the next three years, the | B.C. 21 child care plan coor- dinated by the women’s equality ministry will spend $32.3 million to create 7,500 new daycare Spaces. The Caledonia daycare will handle 24 children aged three and younger, said Judy Scruton, presi- dent of PACES (Parenis and Children’s Educational School) Daycare Society. There is a waiting list of 12 parents and children for the cur- rent 12-space PACES daycare running temporarily out of the Pentecostal church, said Scruton. While the daycare will be physically Caledonia for parents in grade 11-12, another classroom will be’ built inside the daycare, That classroom will be for stu- dents who aren’! yet eligible to go to Caledonia, This way they'll continue to be close to their chil- dren. PACES will run the daycare and school, Scruton said, hiring daycare workers and a teacher through grants fom the social services ministry. ‘We will be asking parents to make a commitment to full-time schooling if they’re going to use the daycare,’’ she said. ‘‘We want to help them graduate while . connected to - ready to begin by either January or Seplember 1995.
