“Ge Sere Ste Ad Me Pe oS Pago AG — Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 4, 1990 ° Port needs much study TERRACE = Any port development at Kitimat will re- quire environmental and feasibility studies no miatter who undertakes the project, says Skeena MLA Dave Parker. Parker, reacting to criticisms following the announcement last week of a $400,000 study to look into the possibility of a provincially-regulated port, said much work is needed before plans can be considered. ‘Any development — whether private sector or municipal, provincial or federal, is going to have to meet tigid environmental standards,” said Parker. “The steps the province is taking must be followed regardless of who develops the port,’? he added. The port development con- cept includes one body which would also have jurisdiction over industrial land develop- ment surrounding the Terrace- Kitimat airport. That. combination, said Parker, would ensure the best possible facilities and methods to handle expert and import goods, ‘it needs to be multi- purpose,’’ added Parker in sug- gesting a Kitimat port would be equipped to handle container traffic, barges, ferries and cruise ships, The MLA, he’s also the minister responsible for nor- thern development, acknowledged that there is already a public port at Prince Rupert but that its facilities are geared only to export products, In contrast, a Kitimat port could deal with a wide range of Dave Parker products for both export and import, said Parker. The first part of the $400,000 study, to be ready this fall, will examine the feasibility of the port development. Phase II, if the first part is approved by the provincial cabinet, will consist of engineering and environmen- tal studies. A seven-member committee with Parker as chairman and consisting of regional - officials has been established to oversee the $400,000 study. kaekkke Several provincial officials, including north coast region economic development officer Bob Thompson, have been assigned to the project. Also working on the project is Doug Smith of Smith Com- munications Ltd., a local public relations firm, He’s nearing the end of a five-month contract with the city to work on economic and social develop- ment policies. From A6 Matter of choice _ And what did Jesus do to the lepers? He healed them! And so He heats gays in our days, if they cry out for help _ God is not ready to punish people for their sins. On the contrary, He gave a Saviour. God is a loving God. We can do many stupid things to ourselves which will kill us, We have our own respon- sibility. By the way, schools are not the place for sex, and condoms are available in many places. Worried mothers have the freedom to supply their kids with them if they want to. What is the problem? Irresponsible peo- ple don’t use them even if you give them for free. Nobody can stop this pro- blem. There are too many of these irresponsible people. Look in your newspaper. How many people are con- victed for drunk driving? How many people are killed that way? Don't tell me they were ignorant, or that they did not get any information! Many people cheose to do wrong (sin). We cannot blame God for our own stupidity and willful disobe- dience of His Law!
