Nineteen-year-old Michelle Hendry, Terrace’s outstanding basketball talent, has been in- volved in her favorite sport on a steady basis since early last fall. The tall blonde: had her first break from the game _ last week _ when she managed nine days at home. in a short holiday. away from the Canadian women’s na-- _ tional team. It’s been almost continual basketball, starting with her out- standing Simon Fraser Universi- ty season, then going right i in to national team ‘training camp in Toronto last month. Michelle’s dream of basket- ball being a stepping stone towards an eventual degree in ~ kinesiology took a major step in - May when, due to a teammate’s _ unfortunate injury, she claimed - the final position on our na- - tional travelling team. They wound ‘up playing in three tournaments, plus exhibi- tion games in Czechoslovakia, Hungary and France. “‘] think we won eight and lost eight, but I can’t really be sure cause ‘things were so hectic.” Time off was rare indeed! ““We'd have shooting practice every morning, then solid work- outs on days we weren't playing,’’ she lamented. ‘‘As for time off, we had half-a-day in Budapest and one day.in Paris. ‘‘Considering we're .a young team, we did pretty well? As for European “officiating — “They let ae go, making games pretty rough at times. You'd probably think. the refs are bad, but Europeans are talented and can get away with a lot.” The trip was tiring — long bus rides to venues, quick warmups ‘for games, then rides back when’ they sometimes got to bed about 3 a.m. When away from the games and workouts, naps were the the - _most important item. _ ‘But the trip was worth it.”’ Terrace entries top Seafest triathlon | The Terrace Sundance three- some of biker Mike Christensen, | runner Ed Ansems and swimmer Jocelyn Coxford emerged vic- torious among 15 other trios at the annual Prince Rupert Seafest Triathlon on June 11. They beat out two hometown threesomes to take home the major prize. Maryanne Rudolph, Ray- mond Bond and Aaron Maragno teamed for the second- place finish, while Paul Cope, Joe. Nelson and Heather Bell teamed up to take third place. Another Terrace competitor — Colin Parr — won the men’s individual section. He finished ahead of Rupert locals Dean McLay and Scott Marineau. _It- was all-Rupert for the women’s top three individuals. Carol Coan, Janice German and Hilary’ Rouse. were one-two- three at the finish line. - Another Terrace competitor —s Jeremy Sayers — actually crossed the finish line first. But it was discovered he has missed a check point and was disqualified in the men’s individual. . “The Christensen-Coxford- Arisems trio, sponsored by Sun- dance, completed the course in one four, 15. 38. minutes. They were more than three minutes in front of the runnersup. In winning the men’s in-— dividual, Parr ‘was three minutes, 49 seconds in front. A total of 17 competitors (male and female). took part in- dividually. Each segment of the triathlon was of different lengths, Swim- ming was one kilometer, biking 25 kilometers, and running eight kilometers, Clark. crashes A collision with two other wheelers just two kilometers in- to the race prevented Terrace’s Dr. Paul Clark from winning the Canadian wheelchair marathon at Winnipeg on Sun- day. Clark collided with two other B.C. wheelers and wound up with a damaged fork on his” chair. He tried to continue, but the damaged chair gave out at the 30-kilometer mark.
