8 Terrace Review — Wednesday, Northstar girls, Schooley to Summer Games Terrace Northstar girls and the Kitimat-Terrace Schooley Sports Combines earned B.C. Summer Games berths at zone seven best-of-three midget Minor Softball playdowns in Terrace on June 5. The Northstars won their series in two straight games. After blanking Hazelton 10-0 on Gail Deinstadt’s one-hit, nine- strikeout pitching performance in game one, they came back to blast Hazelton 23-2 in the deciding match. It was tougher for the Com- bines. They also took on a Hazelton squad which was a last-minute fill-in for Prince Rupert. The Rupert crew felt they weren’t strong enough to compete, and so dropped out. Hazelton drew first blood by plating three runs in the bottom of the seventh to count an 11-10 come-from-behind victory. It meant the Schooley Sports gang would have to win the next two games, and this they did. _ Game two was never in doubt as the Combines ripped Hazelton 9-3. The deciding con- test was much closer as Kitimat- Terrace had to go into overtime before coming up with a 4-3 win. Bluebacks fourth in Prince Rupert meet Despite super efforts from Cory Holland and Jocelyn Cox- ford, Terrace Bluebacks swim club didn’t have sufficient back- ing talent-wise to place any higher than fourth at the Prince Rupert Panhandle meet on the June 4 weekend. More than 60 pool records were broken. Kitimat’s one-two punch of Allison Barriscale and Graeme Last paced the Marlins to 468 points and first place in team point standings. Prince George ran up 448 points to take the runnerup spot. The hometown Rupert amateur club won thrid with 395 points. Terrace’s total was 279 points. Three Alaska swim clubs finished next in standings — Ketchikan with 181, Petersburg 102 and Sitka 30. Masset had 28 points, Ten-year-old Cory Holland of Terrace had the most impressive record of the weekend. In winn- ing his boys 10-and-under ag- gregate, Cory entered 14 events, placed first in all 14 and set Rupert swimming pool records in 13 events. In 10-and-under girls, the Bluebacks’ Jocelyn Coxford amassed sufficient points for the aggregate title. She also took part in 14 events. She won eight, placed second in three, third in one and also notched two fourth-place finishes. Jocelyn counted three pool records in her totals. Allison Barriscale ran off gold medal efforts in 13 of her 14 races. The Kitimat 11-and-12 ace also had a'silver medal and 12 new records. Kitimat’s Last also cleaned up in his 11-and-12 group. He merely entered 14 races and won all 14, Last set nine pool marks and tied another, He and Bar- riscale won their age group ag- gregates handily. a Kirsten Eby of Rupert won the éight-and-under girls ag- gregate, with Robby Jarvill .of . Sitka taking the boys side. Garth Coxford of Terrace was bronze medalist for aggregate boys. While the older Coxford and Holland were cleaning up for nine and 10 aggregates, the Bluebacks’ Aimee Peacock took the silver medal position for girls. Tori Mackenzie of Terrace finished fifth overall behind Barriscale in the 11-and-12 girls aggregate, Jennifer Mackie of Terrace placed fourth in girls 13-and-14 aggreaate. This group was won by Nathalee Paolinelli of Rupert. it was third-place bronze for John Adams of Terrace behind Jeremy Cook of Prince George in 13-and-14 boys aggregate. Senior aggregates went to Mary-Anne Rudolph of Rupert and Kevin Anderson of Prince George. Doug Mackenzie of Terrace was bronze winner on the boys side. Big Chinook top money The first event for Prince Rupert’s Seafest ’88 turned out to be highly successful as the fishing derby attracted 212 en- trants and counted 72 salmon and 30 halibut at the end of the day. The three-day event saw Hugh Charbonneau come out as the big winner. Hugh landed a $1-pound Chinook and took home top money of $500 and a survival suit for his effort. Veteran Jim Greer Sr. hauled in the second biggest salmon — a 40-pound, 12 ouncer. He just. beat out Todd Fabbi by four ounces for second place money of $250 and a stereo. Ed Vermeeren landed the big- gest halibut — a 93-pounder.
