8 Terrace Review — Wednesday, April 2, 1986 Caledonia’s bird bashers take fourth In the best showing ever by a Northwest Zone high school bad- minton team, the Caledonia Kermode boys and girls grabbed fourth place overall at the B.C. Schools’ Provincial Championships in Trail. It was a sparkling ef- fort for coach Robert Cooper’s Stalwarts as they held their own against the cream of the crop from top-ranked schools in B.C. They started in a four- team division for round- robin play. After down- ing Victoria’s Mount Douglas in eight out of 11 matches, they posted a six-win, five-loss mark to beat North Vancou- ver Sentinel. Caledonia’s final round-robin encounter was a seven-to-four vic- tory over the Fraser Valley’s Brookwood. This win pushed them in- to semi-final action where they faced the strong entry from Pen- ticton to start. You can call it an upset if you like, but the Kermode gang came through and won six out of 11 matches against the Lakers. This moved them ahead to face the number one-ranked team from St. Georges of Vancouver. Up til then, St. Georges had lost only two matches to each op- ponent. It turned out to be the same as Caledonia suffered its first loss by a nine-to-two score. The loss dropped them into a playoff game for third and fourth places against Kitsilano, It was a squeaker and Kits beat Terrace by only one match — six-to-five. With only limited op- position throughout the season, the posting of a fourth-place finish has to be Caledonia’s most out- standing sports achieve- ment of the year. To clarify the playoff situation, for 11 matches each team puts up two boys and two girls doubles teams and they each play two matches, giving Terrace a total of . four. Then there's a mixed team that plays two matches, Boys and girls singles;. singles also play two matches each. They then combine to play a mixed match against their opponents.
