It was indeed a wonderful sight to see all these huge monuuinents along the avenue with the Victory column rt the top. We then suw the University of Berlin, the Lib- rary, Restaurant Ave, Belle View Castle, Monument to the Unlnown Soldier, City Hall of Charlottenburg, built in 1692 and under Victory Arch which is the boundry line between Ber- lin and Charlottesburg. Then we were tiken to 1 massoleum where the tather und grandfather of the empor- [er are Inid with their wives, Augusta and Louise. They are white marble tombs with carvings of the departed on the lids. In the ,antiroom is a statute of Peace, and the carved. fig- ures of these four personnges, all re- elintug in the main room. A wonder- ful bine light is shell over the room to represent the shadow of derth. Tt had i wonderful effect. No talking was ulowed and one certainly felt as If one Was in the presence of the dead. On our retum journey we were tak- on to 2 beautifal rose garden, sUppOs- sed to contain 3000 different kinds of toses, avd they were all looking their bast. We passed on through the Bo- tunica] gardens und Exhibition Park ind on to th Foerest den Linden. . Ar. The next thing was to take a taxi home, In Germany instead of constantly hold- jng up tourists for tips they would take you to the wrong hotel, or else take a round about way in order to make the meter registar nbout twice as much as one shomla reilly pay. However, if ne did not kuow the way you were their merey, “This was the last evening that the ‘|iuitty Avas to be together, the majority leaving the hext day for Bremen where they Were to board ship for New York. ‘The next day, August 16, was a free day for final shopiing and packing up the niiay parechases and meking out lists of same for customs officials at this end. The train finolly puiled out itaving only a party of 12 out of 52. Those of us who remained decided to go to the Western. Theatre and a plens-| ant evening was Spent witnessing a! German play. The next day we decided to take a -|side trip to Potsdam on ohe o fthe big| - touring busses We gathered at 9 at Unter den Linden. The day had all appearances of being a very hot one but {€ was glorious. We first toured the city and then travelled through the great forests of Potsdam for lunch, After lunch we entered the Royal chap- el where many trophies and flags of war were stored,“ We then rode on to the Palace of Frederick the Great, one of the most Inaguificent palaces yet seen Beautifully laid ont in some 400 acres of land the paiace itself was built on a Iknoll from which terraces ran down to a beautiful lake. From the palace could be seen the beautiful- ly laid graves of Emperor Fredericks’ horses and dogs for.he was-a lover of bath dogs and animals We then en tered the palace ond passed through the many reoms, oll of - which were elaborately furnished. One room of. note was Voltaire’s who was a favor- ite of Emperor Frederick. -‘Many of Voltaire’s writings were produced here and the majority of the Emporer's books were in French for he did not. consider the German language good’ enough for the cultured people. We then passed into the room in which he passed away, the chair in which he died remaining in the same © place. Throughout the palace there were el- abotate gifts from every nation in the World, consisting, of tapestrics, monu- ments of gold, silver, alibaster, nmber, and marble, also. many beautiful paint- ings. We then went .to.the late Em-' porer’s new palace, but by this: time cur interest for places was waning for we hnd seen so many and must of them’ were Inid out in the same styie, each oue. trying to outdo the other in ex- travagance and splendor. What in- pressed one as most extraordinary was how, all the ground had been utalized tlthough there were some four hund- reil acres Tor isntanee, as one weut down the terraced steps from the pal- ace, after going down twelve steps there would be twelve feet of level ground and then steps again, and on looking back yon could see that under each terrace were long hot houses con- tnining different kinds of friit vines and flowers, All the artifical lakes and fountains were stcoked with fish und on our way back we noticed on all sides the deer scampering away for cover The scenery was wonderful and -, Leatn tite story of lace “quer's speed and beauty ‘from’ a can Of Pormalak, You refinish an article “\@nd=—presto! ow in a few minutes it-ts ready te _ ase, Try it!
