\ 0 Pad is U.S. plans By JOHN SWITZMAN : MONTREAL Webb and Knapp, Inc., of New York, a big real estate firm with interests in most of the larger U.S. cities, has announced that negotiations are proceeding with CNR: for the construction of a “Rockefeller Centre” in the’ heart of downtown Montreal. The pro- posed centre would be built on _CNR property next to ‘the Cen- tral Station. The U.S. interests indicated that the project, involving as much as $125 million is part of the drive of U.S. investment in Canadian real estate, starting with Ontario and Quebec. Enquiry with the CNR in Mon- treal about the announcement get the reply: “We have no deal* with anyone.” However, Douglas Lacombe, CN press and radio supervisor, did confirm that negotiations “were underway with Webb and the brief, ‘Knapp.. He added that there were also negotiations with oth- er interests “including Canadian,” but declined to name them. He explained that it was the New York firm that had made an- nouncement first so the CNR could admit negotiating — “but Wwe have no deal with anyone.” The Montreal Le Devoir, how- ever, reports that an agree- ment ip principle’ has been concluded between CNR and Webb and Knapp. . The CNR owns the valuable .24-acre property, larger than Rockefeller. Centre, around Cen- tral Station in the heart of down- town Montreal.
