PRINCE RUPERT port au- thorities want to draw in more than just their coastal city in the plan to develop a thriving cruise ship industry. They'll need the partic- ipation of businesses, ar- tists and others to offer quality, quantity and var- iety to cruise ship pas- sengers coming ashore at a large new dock beginning next year, says Shaun Ste- venson of the Prince Ru- pert Port Authority, “One thing we did learn is that cruise companies themselves and the pas- sengers want to have a lot ta do,” said Stevenson of several stops this past sea- son of large passenger ships which were regarded as a test of Prince Rupert's ability to act as a host. “We know there is op- portunity in developing a retail base. We know there are gaps and we want to develop a blueprint on which to focus our efforts.” Those gaps — and op- portunities — are the sub- ject later this month of a conference in Prince Ru- pert. As it is, the port author- ity has 36 large cruise ship stops confirmed for 2004, using the dock which will under full construction. That works out to 60,000 passengers and 20,000 crew members ar- riving in Prince Rupert, doubling original projec- tions. The massive new 1,200- foot dock, allowing large ships to tie up directly to the shore area, costs $9 million and is being fi- nanced by the port authori- ty, the City of Prince Ru- pert and the federal and provincial governments, Pile driving for the facility is to start Oct. 1 and the system to unload and load passengers is al- ready under construction on Vancouver Island, said Stevenson. This was part of an original $15 million dock and facility plan but was carved off to reduce the project cost to $9 million to meet available financ- ing. The dock itself is going on almost below the Crest Hotel and the land facility, dubbed the Uplands pro- ject, would stretch toward Cow Bay along the water- front-to the Adin terminal building, developed by the port authority as a retail space and dock for pocket cruise ships, “This would involve reception facility, side 1 Geapn Sreeee OS G0e = a Wi OM GUTTWG REEGER PAGK', GREAT PRIGH'S NGREDIGLE SELEORION. And once that happens, the northwest would begin to attract rubber tire traf- fic, Pond continued. “Instead of people com- ing here just to take a fer- ry, they would be encour- aged to spend a couple or three days in the area. When you consider the Salmon Glacier [near Ste- wart] and the (Nass Val- ley] lava beds, there is lots of potential for the northwest,” said Pond, i This fall we're celebrating our third year in passenger service, looking forward to our tenth anniversary in aviation this winter.
