thorities want to draw in
more than just their
coastal city in the plan to
develop a thriving cruise
ship industry.

They'll need the partic-
ipation of businesses, ar-
tists and others to offer
quality, quantity and var-
iety to cruise ship pas-
sengers coming ashore at a
large new dock beginning
next year, says Shaun Ste-
venson of the Prince Ru-
pert Port Authority,

“One thing we did learn
is that cruise companies
themselves and the pas-
sengers want to have a lot
ta do,” said Stevenson of
several stops this past sea-
son of large passenger
ships which were regarded
as a test of Prince Rupert's
ability to act as a host.

“We know there is op-
portunity in developing a
retail base. We know there
are gaps and we want to
develop a blueprint on
which to focus our efforts.”

Those gaps — and op-
portunities — are the sub-
ject later this month of a
conference in Prince Ru-
pert.

As it is, the port author-
ity has 36 large cruise ship
stops confirmed for 2004,
using the dock which will
under full construction.

That works out to
60,000 passengers and
20,000 crew members ar-
riving in Prince Rupert,
doubling original projec-
tions.

Norwegian Cruise Lines
has committed to 18 visits
with its 2,000 passenger
Norwegian Sky and Celeb-

time, we would preserve
the integrity of small pro-
cessing plants already
there as a working port.”

Prince Rupert mayor
Herb Pond said Premier
Gordon Campbell and oth-
er members of the Liberal
government were lobbied
hard during a visit they
made to the coast city this
summer.

“We regard this as very
crucial,” said Pond of the
on-shore development.
“And they said gel your
application in.”

He said an on-shore de-
velopment showcasing

northwestern products and
tourism opportunities
would also cement Prince
Rupert as a port destina-
tion.

And once that happens,
the northwest would begin
to attract rubber tire traf-
fic, Pond continued.

“Instead of people com-
ing here just to take a fer-
ry, they would be encour-
aged to spend a couple or
three days in the area.
When you consider the
Salmon Glacier [near Ste-
wart] and the (Nass Val-
ley] lava beds, there is lots
of potential for the
northwest,” said Pond,
